Buddy Rich. Maybe he was a jerk but he got results! Saw them in '79 while I was in high school at a state school stage band competition. We actually had the balls to play Channel One Suite in the competition complete with drum solo and then that night... well, we saw them do it...

It does amaze me that, here we are in 2023, and big band continues to flourish around the world. What's especially interesting are the big band contests high schools and colleges put on from time to time. The Garfield HS Jazz Band in Seattle has performances coming up on Jan. 28 at Clark College Jazz Festival and Feb. 4 at Bellevue College Jazz festival. I'll be there...but in spirit only.
