What's the best Wah plugin? I've used a few none sound great. I have EfektorWF and it's decent. I do kind of like the one in the orange tree racks but I can't use it on anything else and would really like something that has a tempo sync. What's everybody using?

 

i use the Logic stock Fuzz-Wah sometimes. Most of them are like you mentioned, not great. all the way down to barely passable.

The Wah,s in Helix Native are pretty good in fact i can barely hear any difference between my Vox Wah pedal and the Vox Wah,s in Helix
But you do have to use the mix parameter and blend in some dry signal i usually go for 55-70% and
8 of the 10 Wah are also tweakable so you can adjust the frequency sweep to your own taste.

 

the free Nembrini works ok. no presets on Mac, no protection, you do not need to install their software manager app. it's one slider you can open and close it with. Sound is acceptable for my uses. I'm not trying to make anything sound like a convincing guitar, so it doesn't need to cross that bar for me.

The "mix knob" is no big obstacle unless you want to blend feedback. otherwise you just dupe the channel. set one 100% wet and the other 100% dry. you can blend the two using two faders and also the send amounts from the channel strip. That's why when Waves "unveiled it as a big new game changing feature" almost no one cared. Besides them.

 

I've never found a wha plugin that I can live with but will try Guitarmaniac64's suggestion about blending to see if it works for me

After my Mu-Tron was stolen I never recovered and am still so very sad 25 years later.

 

I've been happy with the ones with Guitar Rig, stick one before the amp sim and it's good enough. I can just leave my wah in my pedalboard for some home tweedle-dee noodling.

*edit* And in GR the "Pro Filter" (a modelled Pro One filter) in the bandpass mode makes for a nasty wah, that + some overdrive/boost and then amp simp makes for pretty gnarly sounds. But most bandpasses are suitable as long as you tweak the sweep range to suit the guitar (and your playing style).

I remember getting very close to this sound with plugins years ago. I had a Bootsy bass stem and there's a couple parts where he turns it off so you can A/B. The vibe was there but it wasn't as "bubbly" lol

I usually just use Volcano 3 or UVI Shade. Any plugin that has dirty and resonant filters that you can modulate should do (just make sure they are zero latency or close to). Arturia has a couple of synth filter plugins, Cytomic The Drop, apQualizr2, Pulsar Modular P565, Soundtoys FilterFreak, etc etc.

Kuassa controlled with an expression pedal is the closest I got to the real deal.

 

I bought it then sheved it. I'm a harsh master I guess.

 

The happiest I've been with a wah plugin was with the kH bandpass filter inside kiloHearts Snapheap. You get to pick your own modulation (or combinations of mods) and as many 'voices' as you want. Time based LFO, input based envelope follower and/or audio pitch tracking(!).

 

I'll give it a shot, I've got the whole Kilohearts package.
