Hi!! When using Audacity, Audition, and possibly other DAWs that do not support VSTis, a workaround is needed. Rogue Amoeba's Loopback seems to connect standalone soft synths into the input of a track on the above-mentioned DAWs, but if using a plugin instrument, a host is needed. Alas, my question . . .

What is the best virtual instrument host/player for Mac?

for all Mac compatible plugins, BlueCat's Patchwork is usually best. But it's not going to allow you to run Windows plugins in those formats.

I wonder if Patchwork can also do what Loopback does, hence, making things simpler.

Look at BlueCat's Connector. it is a virtual cable/patchbay type of solution also. All the BC plugins are nice. MB-7, FreqAnalyzer, Connector, are all nice "utility" stuff.
