    • Sonos Arc

    The catch with Dolby Atmos

The flagship of the Arc is Dolby Atmos support. This is a sound standard in which sound is not only reproduced in width and depth, but also in height. In other words: rain pelts from above, a helicopter seems to hover above your head. "Every whisper and every explosion is reproduced with impressive detail and depth," says the manufacturer's website. To enhance the spatial impression, some of the sound transducers inside the Arc have been directed towards the sides, the front and the top. Two of the three dome tweeters are angled.

Just a few years ago, Dolby Atmos was reserved exclusively for cinemas, but now it is supported by soundbars from numerous manufacturers - and now Sonos, too. It's about time, after all, 3D sound has long since arrived in the mainstream. Almost every blockbuster is offered with an Atmos soundtrack, and lavishly produced series on Netflix or Apple TV+ also entice with all-round sound.

The big catch: Most users will not be able to hear Dolby Atmos with the Sonos Arc at first. Because the soundbar only has a single HDMI input, the sound from the playback device - whether Playstation 4, Fire TV Cube or Apple TV 4K - must be looped through the TV to the soundbar. However, many TV models and projectors do not support Dolby Atmos; Dolby Digital is usually the end of the line. Even top models that cost more than 2,000 euros three years ago - in our test, a Samsung KS8090 - do not support 3D sound.

For best quality sound i use this Polk Audio Signa S2. I bought this sound bar, and found a nice mounting for it that the TV sits on top of. The sound bar sounds way better than the built-in speakers, which aren't bad themselves. But with the Polk sound bar, it's easier to hear dialog, and there definitely is a surround sound effect. I'm quite happy with it.

Hard to find what fits your budget and requirements, these two I can offer, you have to say whether you prefer to save on JBL or want to make a few cutbacks. I would advise yes to buy a normal 5:1 system and to lay the cables under the carpet.

Teufel Cinebar Ultima with strong sound in the test - even without subwoofer

Equipped with six high-performance speakers, two side-firing speakers for better surround sound, and the built-in subwoofer, the Cinebar Ultima produces a very good sound even on its own.

Although Dolby Atmos support is not offered here, the 380-watt soundbar still delivers a strong surround sound through its side speakers - provided that it is reasonably centered in the room and the side walls reflect well. The internal subwoofer also produces a rich sound in the test, which provides a cinema feeling especially in action scenes and is also pleasing when playing music via Bluetooth. Overall, the Teufel Cinebar Ultima offers a very good sound in the test, which is particularly convincing due to its full surround sound.
