Looking to DL a really good granular VST either for free or from the sister site. What is everyones go to/ favourites? And what makes them unique?

Try Output Portal. It`s very close to unique.

    First thing first
there are basicly 2 different types of Granular
    1. Sample Based (Falcon 2,Polygon 2,Halion and so on) (funny that they all end on "on")
    2. Effects ( MGranularMB, graindad and so on )

With Falcon, you have one of the best Samplers on the market the Granular engine is great for really spooky metallic sounds

I use most of the time the MGranularMB
Unique is that it's multiband, so you can split the effect for every band which make it more versatile

Myself I use a discontinued product: The Mangle. Quite good again today, but abandoned by its developer several years ago, so of course I can't ad it.

What do you mean by precise?
Also, how do you rank Halion?

By "precise" I try to describe the amount and quality of controls that you have on a sound when using it with Rapid Granular engine.
from 8 to 100 grains, grain Length (act like an grain envelope and can be modulated), grain detuning, Randomization of grains Length, level and head play, and finally stereo spread.
That's on oscillator level (3 Oscillatros per layer).
Now throw this into 2 excellent filters (26 types to chose from) and really useful effects. Example: Multiband Saturator 4 bands, with 16 saturation types to chose from for each band, from subtle to destroy, that you can also modulate. All this and more are available in each layer, there are 8 layers...

I cant speak about Halion because I didnt had time to try it seriously. But I would be very interested to hear your opinion and description, if you have experience with it.

Thanks for your anwswer, I understand more clearly now. It does seem like a powerful synth indeed.

I only tried Halion superficially, but I think the grain synth is quite good. What I like most about it is how you can switch between granular synthesis and spectral synthesis easily, with keeping more or less the same control parameters

This "combo" (Newsonicarts Granite + Madrona Labs Virta) is pretty good.

I just read again Tone 2 Electra's 3 description, and there's no mention of granular oscillator.
Did I missed something? Could you give more details please?

This seems like a superb instrument and one that I wasn't aware of until now. Seems strange such a powerful and well designed instrument flying under my radar like that. What's the stability like? Are there any issues that I should be aware of?
