Mac users: rather than the typical 'your DAW's stock plugins' answer to the free software question. How about the built in AU plugins from Apple, that come with every Mac?
They are actually pretty good, and not very flash looking (which apple bashers might find quite confusing). They also might be what you have needed all along, and stop you from buying/downloading yet another plugin
