Modartt introduces Organteq Alpha

ORGANTEQ Alpha is a new generation physically modelled pipe organ that reproduces the complex behaviour of the organ flue pipe.
It is a small organ with a keyboard range of 4 octaves (from F1 to F5) and with 2 stops: a Flute 8' and a Flute 4' (octave).
It is provided in standalone mode only and should be regarded as a foretaste of a more advanced commercial version in development, due to be released during 2018.

Cabbage is a framework for audio software development. Using simple markup text and the Csound audio synthesis language users can target Windows, OSX, Linux and Android with a single piece of source code.

Introduction
Cabbage is a software for prototyping and developing audio instruments with the Csound audio synthesis language. Instrument development and prototyping is carried out with the main Cabbage IDE. Users write and compile Csound code in a code editor. If one wishes one can also create a graphical frontend, although this is no longer a requirement for Cabbage. Any Csound file can be run with Cabbage, regardless of whether or not it has a graphical interface. Cabbage is designed for realtime processing in mind. It is possible to use Cabbage to run Csound in the more traditional score-driven way, but your success may vary.

Cabbage is a 'host' application. It treats each and every Csound instruments as a unique audio plugin, which gets added to a digital audio graph (DAG) once it is compiled. The graph can be opened and edited at any point during a performance. If one wishes to use one of their Csound instruments in another audio plugin host, such as Reaper, Live, Bitwig, Ardour, QTractor, etc, they can export the instrument through the 'Export instrument' option.

Cabbage ships with over 200 audio instruments that which can be quickly exported as VST or AudioUnit plugins. The collection, developed by sound designer Iain McCurdy is one of the largest and most extensive collection of free plugins on the planet. Simply use the 'Export all examples' menu command from the main Cabbage IDE and away you go.

Everything you see in the Cabbage IDE can be customised in terms of look and feel. Open the settings dialogue and select create your own custom theme.

Iran is probably not the first place that comes to mind when thinking about modern electronic music. After the revolution of 1979 transformed the country into an Islamic Republic, political tensions, economic sanctions and cultural isolation all kept the country’s music culture turned squarely inward. From the 1980s onward, traditional folk and classical music were the only officially approved forms and pop and rock musicians went underground, forced to perform well outside the view of censors. Obtaining and listening to music from outside the country was difficult and at times dangerous and only in the last decade or so have Iran’s citizens – thanks largely to widespread internet access – been able to freely follow and participate in worldwide developments in music.

Some restrictions are still in place, but because electronic music is largely wordless, it is widely perceived to be less of a corrupting influence on the youth of Iran and so electronic musicians are afforded a certain degree of freedom to perform, organize festivals and even tour outside of the country. In this rapidly evolving scene, Ata Etbekar aka Sote occupies a somewhat unusual position; having lived in Germany and the US for most of his life and released on labels such as Warp, Sub Rosa, and Morphine, the now Tehran-based artist is familiar with the realities of music making both inside and outside of Iran. Translating this dual perspective to his artistic practice, Sote’s most recent album, the critically acclaimed Sacred Horror In Design, brings his advanced synthesis techniques into dialogue with traditional Persian instruments. The resulting unsteady rhythms, radical sound transformations and extreme timbres make for an at times challenging listen. But there is also much that is immediately rewarding, delicate and beautiful in Sote’s musical meditations on opposition and reconciliation.

In our interview, Ata delves into the details of the recording and live performance of the album. He also traces his musical upbringing and sketches the current situation for music makers in Iran. Plus, he shares samples from the track “Holy Error” which you can download for free and use to make your own version.

Sounds In Context: Sampled Instruments from Pre-Columbian America

What did the music of America sound like before the arrival of Europeans? What sounds inspired music in the pre-Columbian age? How were the instruments that reproduce them created? What everyday and ritual activities was music a part of?

The Metaphor of Sound, a recent exhibition, at the Museo del Oro in San José, Costa Rica invited visitors to ask these questions – and many others – as they took a tour of more than 60 musical instruments dating from 500 BC to 1550 AD. Flutes, bell clusters, whistles, maracas, ocarinas (a type of wind instrument), and rattles from the North and South Pacific as well as the Central Caribbean region of Costa Rica were among the objects on display.

Music was of great social and cultural importance in pre-Columbian societies, particularly for the collective as whole. And so it was only fitting that, after having been brought into the Metaphor of Sound project through colleagues, Charly Fariseo – a musician, producer and Ableton Live trainer based in San José – decided to take the archeological idea of preservation and interpretation one step further.

Fariseo asked himself, why keep these instruments in ‘silence’ when we have the ability to extract their sounds, share them with the world and explore them with today’s music technology? With this in mind, Fariseo dove into the task of making multi-sample recordings of some of the exhibit’s instruments and then building them into playable Ableton Instrument Racks.

SpectralHarp
SpectralHarp lets you strum the sound spectrum in various ways by giving you a set of strings that activate different frequencies depending on how you configure them. You can choose the portion of the sound spectrum you want to strum as well as how many strings to display from that portion. There are additional knobs for Pitch, Decay, and Crush, which allow you to further modify the sound.

Evaluator is inspired by bytebeat, a "genre" of music discovered by viznut, which he documented in several youtube videos.

Evaluator's approach, however, is not purist, and its language is not C. The language contains much of the same syntax, most of the operators, and the same operator precedence, but introduces some additional features that make generating musical sounds a little bit easier and also make real-time MIDI control of the program possible. It also includes several built-in presets that demonstrate all the language features, supports save/load to fxp, and loading a program from a plain text file.

The basic idea is that a program operating on 64-bit unsigned integers is used to generate every audio sample. The program essentially runs in a while loop that automatically increments the variables t, m, and q before executing the program code each time.

Why make a clipper when there are already so many?
Little Clipper is the lighter, smaller version of it’s big brother (Big Clipper). Clipping is one of the more misunderstood processes in mixing. When used correctly, it can make mixing easier. Things just fall into place better and dynamics stay under control. As it is with all effects however, it’s easy to overdo. Little Clipper makes it easy to dial in with clear meters that show you how much clipping is occurring, and all the essential features that let you dial in your clipping to be just the right amount.

Hard/Soft Clipping
Sometimes you need crisp hard clipping, sometimes you need smoother soft clipping. Little Clipper lets you choose easily how hard you want your clipping to be.

Stereo or Mid/Side
Little Clipper lets you choose your channel configuration for stereo tracks. We have found that clipping often sounds much more natural in Mid/Side mode on stereo buses. It even lets you clip only the mid or side channels without affecting the other, giving you even more control over your clipping.

I thought clipping was bad. Why would I do it on purpose?
Just like all effects, clipping is bad when you do it accidentally. When used purposefully, it’s a powerful tool that that can be used to increase your apparent dynamics without making your peaks jump all over the place. It’s especially powerful on drums. Just a little bit of clipping your snare before your compressor will give your compressor much more natural sounding, predictable results.
