Best Free Software for Making Music

Discussion in 'Software' started by Oysters, Nov 4, 2014.

  1. Sorry, Win 8 on FLS. I didn't install C++ along with them as I already have done so previously for other installations. Perhaps that is the reason?

    Rack
VCV Rack is the engine powering VCV modules. Add modules, connect cables, edit parameters, and save/load patches. Create generative patches with your mouse, perform with your MIDI keyboard controller, or connect it to your favorite DAW using the Rack Bridge VST/AU plugin (coming soon). In Rack, control voltages and audio signals are equivalent, so you can modulate parameters with sonic-range VCOs to create customizable FM synths or chaotic wave-shaping oscillators. If you already own a modular synthesizer, you can enhance your setup with an audio interface supporting CV signals (see [1] [2]) or a CV-MIDI-CV interface module with Rack's CV Interface (coming soon).

Includes the Fundamental plugin pack with 8 high quality analog-modeling sound generators, processors, and utilities.

    Audible Instruments
Based on the Mutable Instruments Eurorack modules, Audible Instruments gives you a collection of complex sound generators, modulation sources, sound modifiers, and signal utilities. All modules which are based on real digital modules are ports of their original source code, so generated signals are faithful to the hardware.

    E-Series
The E-Series plugin features a port of Synthesis Technology's E340 Cloud Generator, a VCO capable of fat, chaotic, and swarming sound with up to eight combined saw and sine oscillators detunable with a spread parameter and filtered noise.

    Befaco
Includes Befaco's EvenVCO, A*B+C, Spring Reverb, Mixer, Slew Limiter, and Dual Attenuverter modules, with DSP measured from hardware. Rampage, VC ADSR, and Hexa VCA coming soon!

    SuperCollider
    http://supercollider.github.io

SuperCollider is a platform for audio synthesis and algorithmic composition, used by musicians, artists, and researchers working with sound. It is free and open source software available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

    SuperCollider features three major components:
    • scsynth, a real-time audio server, forms the core of the platform. It features 400+ unit generators ("UGens") for analysis, synthesis, and processing. Its granularity allows the fluid combination of many known and unknown audio techniques, moving between additive and subtractive synthesis, FM, granular synthesis, FFT, and physical modelling. You can write your own UGens in C++, and users have already contributed several hundred more to the sc3-plugins repository.
    • sclang, an interpreted programming language. It is focused on sound, but not limited to any specific domain. sclang controls scsynth via Open Sound Control. You can use it for algorithmic composition and sequencing, finding new sound synthesis methods, connecting your app to external hardware including MIDI controllers, network music, writing GUIs and visual displays, or for your daily programming experiments. It has a stock of user-contributed extensions called Quarks.
    • scide is an editor for sclang with an integrated help system.
SuperCollider was developed by James McCartney and originally released in 1996. In 2002, he generously released it as free software under the GNU General Public License. It is now maintained and developed by an active and enthusiastic community.

    Automatonism

    https://www.automatonism.com/the-software/[IMG]

Automatonism is a modular synthesiser that runs in the open source programming language Pure Data. It features a large library of 67 modules. Follow these simple steps to get started:

    1. Install Pure Data Vanilla on your device.
    2. Download Automatonism_1.1.zip
    3. Open the file "main.pd". Read the Quick Guide and Manual, which are integrated into the software.
    4. Start patching!
Modular synthesis is akin to musical gardening: modules can spring to life and their interconnections suggest the formation of a sonic ecosystem. The act of patching is no different to playing any other instrument: it affords the opportunity to express oneself and directly engage with other people.

It is towards that goal of performability and communication that Automatonism was created. It mimics the signal flow of a physical modular but features dynamic preset management and advanced parameter mapping tools on an open-source platform.

Most importantly, it will hopefully encourage people to delve into the making of generative algorithms via modular synthesis. If you want to support this project and the future development of the software, you are kindly directed to the Automatonism Bandcamp, or to book a live-performance/lecture/workshop.

  7. There are also a few other freebies on the site, just go and visit. There are panners, delays, a limiter and even a sound module called "goldenGenerator which is a binaural/monaural beats generator that works by waveforms based on the golden number. It takes extremely low resources! Golden and easy way to create healing music..."

Holy fuck there is so much valuable yet random info.
ever try single repeats of delay with theses numbers? I've got it setup with an exp. pedal to start from the shortest and gradually add the next . I used close to 10 GVST Gdelays gradually decreasing the volume as the delay times increased.
It's cool to send a select few notes to the long delay while quickly decreasing for faster passages. It is quite magical how the 10 delays don't interfere with each other.

Sound Surfer Synthesizer (VST + AU)
SyndtSphere is basically a sphere version of our polyphonic synthesizer Syndt. With a minimalistic approach, it features a unique experience of ”surfing” between presets. All parameters are morphed according to the proximity of the different presets. By rotating a sphere that consists of more than 70 professionally created states, anyone can dial in the perfect sound without having to deal with specific parameters.

In addition to the sphere, a ping-pong delay and a few more global settings are available.

    DDMF PLUGINS
    https://ddmf.eu/freeware/

    Freeware
Some of the best free VST plugins and Audio Unit plugins available can be found on this site. They may not come with all the bells and whistles of DDMF’s payware plugins but their sonic qualities are undisputed. And, new to the party: the free Transport plugin!

    Transport
A handy little tool which provides all the information about measure, time, sample count etc that most hosts usually hide somewhere in a tiny little part of the screen. Transport is resizable and you can pick your own colours. Ideally, you’d drag it onto an external monitor in your 1000 square feet wooden studio and make it fullscreen so that your recording artists always stay oriented, but it works in smaller settings as well ;-). Made upon request by a DDMF user, we thought this gem is too good to not make it available for everybody. Transport is available as a 32 and 64 bit plugin in VST, RTAS, AAX (Win + Mac) and AU (Mac) format. MacOSX 10.6 is required.

    Download (Win) Download (Mac)

    ColourEQ
Not just another EQ: with its custom-made 4th order IIR filter, ColourEQ sounds unlike any other EQ you have ever come across. It comes with five bands of \”super parametric\” peaking filters, which means that there is one more parameter in addition to the traditional gain/width/frequency set that can influence the curve shape. These shapes cannot be reproduced by ordinary IIR equalizers. Further features include: adjustable GUI colours, freely resizable window size, internal 64 bit processing and low CPU usage. Available in Windows VST (32/64 bit), Windows/Mac RTAS and Mac VST/AU format (Intel, OSX 10.5 and higher).

    IIEQ
The IIEQ is a free, fully parametric 10-band equalizer with its own, characteristic sound and low CPU consumption. The 1st and the 10th band are low and high shelf filters, respectively; all other bands are peak filters. Individual bands can be switched on and off (click on the small green buttons!). It is available for Windows (32/64 bit) and Mac (32 bit). Alternative GUIs are available for Windows 32bit only.

    SmallEQ
Sick and tired of huge GUIs taking up all screen space? Want an EQ that easily fits in your pocket but sounds just like the big guys? Then it’s time to meet SmallEQ! The world’s smallest 10-band EQ, sporting eight fully parametric bands plus one low- and one high-shelf filter on exactly 9135 square pixels. Controls from left to right: band choice, gain, frequency, width and overall gain.

    BussColors 4
    http://www.airwindows.com/busscolors-4/

TL;DW: The Airwindows console emulations, now working up to 192K correctly.

    Download
    BussColors4

I’m very pleased to bring you the latest version of BussColors :)

This plugin’s a pretty huge deal: it’s been around since before console emulations were a thing, and I’ve been steadily working on it year after year. There’s not been much to do: my original algorithms, once I moved past the earliest incarnation as the ‘Character’ plugins, were so solid that it left little to do. BussColors has sold $22,445 of plugins over the years, as Audio Units alone, in spite of the fact that it has always been a 44.1K plug (due to being based on a convolution model).

The story there is, a guy at NoiseVault always wanted someone to make a plugin which used his sets of hardware convolution kernels, which he’d done at all different levels. Sort of the Nebula thing (Giancarlo has been a great help when I was getting the VST thing going, check out Nebula)

I’m not that. I’m Chris from Airwindows… so I set out to make my own version of this sort of thing, with hardcoded algorithms generated on-the-fly, as raw and close to the metal as I could get it. And I got some pretty respectable CPU efficiency with all of the tone quality I wanted, limited to 44.1K.

    UNTIL NOW :)

Try it. BussColors4 is the newest version of BussColors, and it works at any sample rate and gets you the same sound. Better, in fact: I like what it does a lot better at 96K and 192K. It also doesn’t greatly expand processing and CPU hit at higher sample rates. I think this one’s a real highlight of the Airwindows arsenal. It would definitely be worth your $50, like its predecessors (well, I always did give existing BussColors users free updates for life, I mean for new buyers). Feel free to shoot it out against the most expensive and/or CPU-hungry options and I think it will clobber all comers.

    ToTape5
    http://www.airwindows.com/totape5/
TL;DW: The highest quality Airwindows analog tape emulation.

    ToTape5

ToTape5 is the best Airwindows analog tape emulation. It builds upon the previous four versions (which have been some of my best sellers) and incorporates everything learned from the Purest series of plugins, to produce a tape emulation that does what analog does. (Analog tape does really good things for mixes, and it’s very difficult to get it right without sinking into a morass of overprocessing and digital blandness)

It’s better than Iron Oxide, always was. Iron Oxide is for ‘slamming tape for effect’, for putting on individual tracks, not realism. ToTape is for realism and quality: for ‘mixing to tape’, in the box. I don’t think there is anything else that can stand as much scrutiny as ToTape will: it’s developed on mastering-grade gear and when used in its most optimized state, it’s not a toy. It should be more transparent and musical than most plugins (never mind ‘tape emulation’ plugins, which are generally not even as transparent and musical as a good digital EQ plugin).
