Hey guys.

I use Reaper live on a laptop to run backing tracks when I perform in my Duo through a scarlett 18i20.

We want to also have a stripped back version for when we do laid back acoustic gigs at wineries/cafe's etc.
What I wanted was a simple daw that I can run on an android tablet with basically only 3 tracks. A clicktrack (panned left) and 2 mono string tracks (panned right).
Plan to just come straight out of the headphone socket, split the signal so the click goes to my in ears and the strings to the speaker.

I know any daw will do this easily.

But when I use reaper for our full setup, i have a track in reaper that is filled with empty items and I just have a guide for all the chords for each song that scroll along during the song.

So I was after a tablet daw that will do this feature as well like how I use it in reaper.

I've found a handful of daws that work on android tablets. But when researching what each one does, I can't see anything about being able to add text to a track.

Anyone here have any experience using tablet daws that have this feature??

I made an account just to reply to you since no one else has yet.. maybe the site isnt very active? idk, i got here randomly myself and just decided to take a look around. Saw this was made on the 2nd and felt bad for ya not getting any help when Its not even a really tough question haha..

Anyway, I'm a big fan of FL Studio Mobile myself - Yes, I do also use it on my PC as well making me a little bias but I honestly I started using FL Mobile before I got the desktop version and still use it probably just as often on my iPad and Android Tablets as I do my computer and I think FL Studio has a lot in common with Reaper, ** I think ** Im not extremely well versed in Reaper but visually I thought it shared a lot of things in common with FL and the fact that it was Free was interesting too. Anyway, back to your question about a suitable DAW on mobile. I believe FL will be able to handle the things you're looking to be able to achieve, It's a paid mobile app though just a heads up.. $14.99 for it but Image-Line has also been updating it suuuper regularly with new sounds and features and stuff that's not just bug fixes that you hardly notice they fixed like most app updates tend to be. So, it's a little more exciting and nicer to have the app keep progressing and developing into an even better music production tool on the go.

If you really don't wanna spend money, there are Free Daws too i just don't know an awful lot about them and tend to delete them pretty quick after I download them mainly because when I've tried certain free music apps they are packed with stupid dang ads that continually play and ruin your creative flow... ads in games in one thing but while making music - NOPE!

Some free ones you could try out tho would be:

Audio Evolution Mobile (Trial Version) - i think this one was kinda a pro tools/cubase vibe

Audiosdroid Audio Studio - Never tried it but it looked promising in the app store

Mixpad Multitrack Mixer - Again promising looking

Recording Studio Lite - Looks to be a Garageband Clone with a nice feature set, just might be able to do what you're looking for as well.

So if your gonna be recording anything with it, I would say to go with Audio Evolution Mobile Studio, and make sure you get the proprietary USB Audio Driver (its an in-app purchase). I own both Audio Evolution Mobile Studio (with the driver) and FL Studio Mobile. I also own a Signature License for FL Studio for PC. So I got MAD love for FL BUT for a mobile device, Audio Evolution is majorly slept on. So I'll try to outline my experience with it.

1 - First and foremost, I was able to get really low latency using my Behringer UM2 audio interface, my Galaxy s10e (with an OTG adapter), and AEMS. Now this might not be such a plus with an iOS device, and I'd try it first before buying the addon, but all my devices are Android and Android doesn't handle audio very well by default.

2 - if your recording vocals, there is another in-app purchase I think its called Vocal Pitch Studio? Basically its like Newtone or Melodyne, and you can edit vocal tracks in the same way.

3 - the developer is super awesome. I report bugs, just because I like the product and its my way of contributing to better future versions. He responds, personally, everytime with whether or not there is a workaround, or to let me know he's already looked into and what the issue or whatever. Example I have an old Galaxy Tab4 that I like to push to its limits, and AEMS crashed when trying to use my interface. Turns out its something to do with Android 5 (which is as far as this POS goes, its old) but yeah hes definitely a good dude.

4. As far as I know I get lifetime updates? I guess that typical of Android apps but I bought it like a year ago, and still updating.

5. The Vocal Chain - so this thing lets you use as many effects as your device can handle. It comes with some stock plugins, including a pretty impressive auto-tune knock off. You can also buy plugins, they're made by ToneBoosters. The auto tune works really well too.

6. The midi-sequencer is decent, its not as good as FL Mobile (you know I'm invested in Image-Line I'm gonna call em the GOAT lmao) but it will get you by.

In my limited experience but honest opinion Audio Evolution Mobile Studio is the closest thing to an actual DAW that I've found, for Android specifically and a big factor is that proprietary USB driver. Beyond that I like the support and the options. I think its worth the $14.99 + $5.99 or whatever that driver is and I also bought the Auto Tune pro. They offer a 30 day trial in the playstore, so you can try it out before you buy it. Even if you buy it and don't use it, if you think you may be producing on the road and on the fly, its definitely worth having!

 

just keep using laptop with Reaper, but utilize tablet as remote controller (either via vnc/rdp, or via Reaper's web interface, eventually custom with something like WRB)

 

Yeah, I've got 2 HP EliteDesk Mini's that are like smaller than a modern DVD player, 35watt i5 quad core with 16gb of ram, and I've been looking at ways you could set it up to be an ultra portable DAW. I was actually using this app for android called spacedesk, that has a server you install on the pc and allows you to use the tablet as a portable display, either tether or untethered (via WIFI) and it actually works really well, touch screen and all. You could have a computer running and bring a tablet and use something like that to control it, basically the monitor right there with you and the system out of the way.

spacedesk acts like a driver, so it can start up and automatically connect to the display. The tablet will show up in Display Properties just like any other monitor.

 

I purchased the iPad version of Cubase a couple of years ago when it was on offer (still wasn't cheap) and I didn't really use it much, I find the experience of using a DAW on a tablet (even my larger iPad pro) too fiddly. On top of that a year later Steinberg released a new version - great I thought... But they release new major versions as a new app and you have to buy it again each time. I should have realised they would do that before I bought it but I'm an idiot.
