I agree that even the best available emulations will always miss something that hardware provide.
I can even say my Roland TR-505 sounds much deeper than any 192/64 sample we can can find on the market just because, though being digital, it comes out from something real.

So yeah! These two different mixes you used as examples won't sound the same. It's an evidence.
That's why I don't buy plugins anymore at the time but try to save bucks to afford a Prophet-6 or an OB-6 (tough choice).

But until I have such an amount of money I'm glad some developers just made a great job that allow us to use colors we enjoy even though they'll always miss something.
Like being in front of a wonderful painting and watching it through a photograph, like your girl and YouPorn, etc... ^^

In order for something to be truly analogue wouldn't it have to be recorded and rendered through an analogue process? Recording an MPC60 or Roland TR-8 to your DAW seems like it would defeat the purpose. As your A/D convertors are translating everything to digital. Seems like in order to even have a genuine analogue workflow, you'd have to work in an actual analogue environment. Like recording everything to tape for example.

For me, the biggest problem with emulations is the bass. It just doesnt sound right to my ears.
I have some different analog hardware synths, som old, some new. They all sound more "alive" in a way,
and they just sit better in the mix.

Recently I experimented with routing plugins out of the computer and through some hardware effects, or
simply back in through another channel. I think it sounds better.
But Im an old fart who likes this kind of music:

I would like to mention Memory Moon stuffs - As the ME-80 v2 emulation of the CS-80 is in IMO better than Arturia's edition...
and by the way the free Elektrosudio Bundle

Ms-20 is the only plugin I liked , so far.
I am into spire, sylenthand massive. The only reaktor library I use is airpiano (which isn't a piano)

I would still go with a micro-korg or one of its derivatives for analog sound.

I couldn't tell you the first thing about the difference between analog/digital synthesis, having only ever used digital mediums. That being said since I have had my hand in producing a lot of Nu Disco for the last couple years, I can tell you what I enjoy to get a somewhat authentic sounds as far as making music that sounds more "vintage" or dated. Hope it helps a little bit.

First off I used to really really like NI's Pro 53 software. Unfortunately it's now a discontinued product but it did a really had a great UI and sounded really great out of the box (you should still be able to find torrents of it, though I think it only comes in 32 bit). Monark is also really good but I still really lament NI for discontinuing that product as it was my go to for 80s/70s synth sounds. There's is the the Korg Legacy collection and since they actually built the MS 20 among many other classic synths, I'd imagine they do a great job of capturing their own sound (it sounds fairly accurate when I compare them to old house tracks using the hardware synth). Lastly in the synth department, one of my personal favorites especially in terms of freeware as well as capturing some really nice stuff is the stuff on http://www.elektrostudio.ovh.org/index.php?go=start. These collection of synths are incredibly soulful and I love the sounds and the filter modeling is superb! Unfortunately, it seems the dev has moved on from that particular project for some years now and the vst's are only offered in the flavor of 32 bit (nothing jbridge can't take care of if you use a DAW that doesn't support native bridging) not to mention some of them can get glitchy at times. Still when you can get them to play nicely

As for other things I use to give things a more dated sound. My bread and butter that I use at least somewhere in the mix, often times in several different chain is Audiothing's Vinyl Strip. It does a really good job at giving the illusion of something having been lifted from vinyl. It adds that extra bit of detail and somewhat randomizes things to your liking in terms of extra clicks and pops. In conjunction with Vinyl Strip, I usually also add Uhe Satin to complete the illusion of having sampled from Vinyl onto a classic reel to reel Tape. It gives everything it touches that classic feeling of warmth. Not to mention the tape delay effects and some analog distortion. Lastly, I usually finish the chain off by adding Softube's Fet Compressor, it does a really great job of gluing everything together and adding a touch of non-digital sounding distortion.

Happy producing and hope this helps =)
