Hi guys! Recently I've been trying to collect the knowledge about microphones from the fantastic gropudiy.com. There I found out that instead of paying thousands of euros, one (not particulary educated in electronics) could swap a capsule on Alctron MC410; get a bunch of Takstar CM60 (and if you epoxy holes on it, it will become omni), or even get a ever precise Line Audio CM4. Not mentioning the actual DIY aspect, where people could arrange a scheme for their specific body and capsule...

But there are very little information on dynamic microphones, specifically about stage vocal ones.

People tend to like SM57 because of its versatility and long reputation, but its scuffed frequency response is a Polichinelles secret..

So why do we buy dynamic microphones in general? What is it that makes us prefer them over condenser microphones? Sound rejection? Size? Fool-proof?

What are your best suggestions for someone who wants to get a full sound on stage, without spending too much buck? Myself, I'm leaning towards sE V7

    For vocals only ?
    Supercardoid
Integrated low cut OR starting at around 70Hz

    Like AKG D5 :

Very balanced, 70Hz "cut". And nice high freqs smoothness.
Meaning even a deaf live sound engineer with crappy speakers will LESS butcher your voice with bass mess and high freqs "over shrill".

But it will be VOCALS only, unlike SM57.

sE V7 is really good. You might want to check the Podcastage YouTube channel, dude makes really good reviews and comparisons.

I use a SM58 because it fits my voice well... that's the thing really, in a perfect world you would be able to audition lots of mics and find the one that compliments you. The SM7 is still great for voice over but not stage. Overall the EV is probably a more universally useful than the Shures...

Personally I think that this kind of tests is kinda irrelevant. I prefer measurements and teardowns.

"full sound on stage", meaning no control on EQ in certain situations

That's why i advice an supercardoid AND low cut/70 Hz

SM58 is NOT supercardoid BUT 50Hz
SM57 is NOT supercardoid BUT 40Hz

ev S7 is "supercardoid" BUT start at 40Hz
AKG D5 is "supercardioïd" AND start at 70Hz

Now it seems most ppl prefer to use Youtube "reviews" instead of real world arguments ... so i'm out
Ev S7 is a BETTER stage vocal mic than SMs.
BUT AKG D5 is even better.

And for YT reviews wh*res :

To me, it obliterates every concurrent in this price bracket ... because it is supercardioïd AND cut at 70Hz, with even high freqs.
Now do what you want. You will be happy with any choice here.

But SMs are NOT the best bang for the buck for STAGE VOCALS.
