    Hi guys

I wasn't able to find any threads on this. I would like to pick your brain... How would you go about creating the effect of the sound coming from the room next door? Either a general technique or a preset in one of your favorite reverbs.

    Thanks!

Hi Sylvian. I have achieved the best results with Altiverb 7 XL and the post-production presets under "Next door wall and floors". Cheers.

Yeah, probably the most important reverb I don't have. I would have made a safe blind bet on that one LOL
Thanks :) I'll try to get it.

P.S. I think I had a hard time getting the lib files to work on the Mac.

Depends on what kind of ''room'' you want to achieve, but typically the trick consists of a reverb plugin and an EQ used for LPF.

And ofc there are a lot of variables that come into play, again, depending on what kind of ''room'' you want to achieve.
If it's a club, hallway, ordinary apartment room etc. depending on that choice, you pick the type of reverb you'd use.

Playing with the attack/predelay also affects the effect you want to get e.g. the room sound being slightly scattered because of the sound bouncing off of walls around.

Shoutout for Speakerphone (also by Audioease) for doing lots of similar, dedicated, fx?

    Yup, good thinking.
I also used iZotope Trash 2's convolve section a couple of times for these kinds of fx's.

Lowpass and room impulse response. I like SIR2 for convolution reverb. You can offset the upper frequencies in time (later) so that the lows hit/transplant first as they do IRL.

Additionally, you need to make it more or even complete mono and compress it to suppress the highest dynamics (without gain makeup).

And, to make it more noticeable, you'd want the section this reverb is on, cut to -or cut with a different sounding reverb with higher frequencies. I mean, it's best to not use this type of reverb all the way through.

Convolution reverbs are nice for this, but you can basically use any reverb. I personally like the Exponential Audio products.
Maybe add a tad of distortion, put a LPF with a slope of 6 to 9 dB per octave after the reverb. Just think of what a real wall does to sound.
