True. Then Timbaland and The Neptunes cme along and sampled tablas and Latin percussion. Here:

Not Timbaland. It was done by Brian Kidd. One of Timbaland's former ghost (ahem, I mean "staff") producers.

  5. It's hard to choose, so I'll offer this anthology, as the first that really opened my ears and mind when I was around 13 or so. Maybe not one of my best examples, but one that influenced me:

Yes, but I mostly discovered jazz later.

True, but from a compositional angle, this always involves trying to fit essentially non-grid percussion into grid time, in a DAW that doesn't understand rhythm. There's great hacks, like groove templates, and M4L devices to nudge events. Anyway, I already complained about that. Grids are not time, they are a way to avoid dealing with time because it's easier.

For example, look at how simple it is to seed some complex rhythms in OpenMusic by just typing a string of values, compared to how long they would take to program in a typical DAW:

The closest thing I have used to a dedicated graphical non-grid sequencer with a fundamental grasp of rhythm is Bol Processor 2, which is like 25 years old, and hardly anybody used even in its day.
