hi,i am using a kick, snare ,hats, clap from a a battery kit in cubase.i added a rack instrument and have 4 midi tracks, and each sound assigned a separate output.
do i need to to assign a separate midi channel to each sound? as it works if they all on midi channel 1,or if i put them 1,2,3,4

Because each sample is assigned to a different midi note value, they can all share the same midi channel.

If you want each sound assigned to a different audio channel, you'll have to enable extra outputs for battery & assign each sound to a different mono or stereo battery output. To enable extra outputs in cubase, click on the down-arrow next to the battery plugin entry in the VSTi rack.

EDIT: After enabling extra audio outputs, to assign each sound a different output channel, right-click on the sound pad you want to change (which will open an options context menu), then select the 'output' sub-menu at the bottom.

Agree with above, but wanted to add, having them on separate audio outputs doesn't mean you need them on different MIDI tracks as well.

Nowadays, hardly any reason at all. It used to be the case (many ages ago with physical serial midi cables) that overloading a particular midi channel could cause midi buffer and/or trigger timing issues. In a modern DAW environment (i.e. routing midi internally digitally via software), this is irrelevant.

Usually when loading multiple instrument patches in a single instance of any multitimbral sampler, which is common for orchestral composing.
