I'm looking for a program that gives some flexiblity in batch file renaming. Mainly the ability to delete the first few characters of many files different names at once, but leave the rest of it unchanged. Thanks for any advice on this.

I've not used any GUI tool, but it's trivial to do in Bash:

CUT_CH=2; IFS="|"; for filename in *; do cp $filename ${filename:CUT_CH}; done

This would remove CUT_CH characters (in this case 2) from a filename and make a copy. Of course it can be made just to rename but I prefer some safety always.

If you use Linux or macOS you've got bash, and it's simple to install on Windows, just install Git and you get "Git Bash" that can be used for this.

I use the same thing it takes some getting use to but it works great.It has a bunch of functions so at least for me it's been up to any task.

Total Commander is a bit complexer (needs some plugins for some tasks ) but is also a good choice.

Flash Renamer (since 1999), does exactly what you asked for, and much more. Works as a shell extension. Has a preview of the results.
