A feat of programming and game changer for the music industry or over-used
by the un-talented?

I first heard autotune on the Cher single believe in 1998 and I didn't think much
of it. My opinion didn't improve for the next 17 years while it was smeared all
over the tv and radio into a warbling miasma of fogettable pop hits.

But...it is an incredibly ingenious bit of programming. I gave it a go recently and
it gave me an idea that not only changed my production but also, to an extent,
changed my life.

If a man uses it to pitch his voice up an octave (unlike with a pitch shifter) he
doesn't sound like a chipmunk...he sounds like a woman...



How do you feel about Anteres Auto-Tune?

 

It has helped me learn chromatic scales, I can recognize the difference between them now.
7 years of producing without auto tune didn't learn me that

Yep it's just a tool, it's what you do with it that matters

 

Cher used a vocoder if im not mistaken.

I think honestly it's a great plug in.
Over used? Yes!
But never the less it gets the job done and adds character to audio recordings!

For me it's a thumbs up

 

That's a big question tbh.
it depends on how it's used

the public seems to have an idea about auto-tune that it can make "anybody" sound good.
the point of auto-tune is to be used subtly.

although then theres the other option being creative using autotune using it to manipulate audio to take it to another level. (like you mentioned with cher)


and then theres rappers who use it to create pretty generic sounding crap.

personally i've only ever used it to help pull in a few notes from singers.

so i'm quite indifferent. it has its purposes and it has people who abuse it.
