Call me cynical, but I think this will eventually backfire on artists.

the article says "Wholly AI-generated tracks will not be eligible for the ARIA Charts"

They aren't giving out awards for 100% prompted songs. Which is one of the MANY ways to use AI in the music making process.

I support this type of regulation. If a human is prompting, generating, and spamming DSPs with music, it takes away from the musicians who make music in other ways. The platforms for music made that way allow you to post that on there.

Way back when, the Luddites thought drum boxes and synths would replace musicians, they didn't, & if AI ever tops the the Land of Oz charts there will be an Aussie behind it.

I'm fed up to the back teeth with people who aren't songwriters, telling me what tool I can or can't use to make my music. I don't use or need AI because compared to me it's useless, i can do so much better, why would I?

I doubt AI will ever be able to compete aesthetically with the creative human mind, hence all AI music stems from human interaction.

Preventing fraud is one thing, censorship is another.

It's the quality of the music that matters, not the method of construction, drum boxes and synths saw to that no problem, same will happen to AI no doubt.

Chart music is due a kick up the arse, say like Punk gave it, perhaps it's the young 'uns with AI that will map the future of innovative music eh.

'til then I'll use anything I want to produce my music regardless of what ignorant Luddites and their cronie clones want from their daft intrusive legislative handcuffs.

Put AI in BIG BOLD LETTERS on AI produce let people make up their own mind, i don't want or need others deciding what I can or can't listen to. Period.

It doesn't really matter what AI can or can't do, the thing is people don't care, even if there was an "AI stickers" or something, they would listen anything as long as it is presented to them in a convenient way. For now it's in competition with real music (if there's such a thing) because everybody live their life listening to that and AI music is brand new (compare to a lifetime scale). This sort of protection if to avoid real music from disapearing the chart, because at some point, new generation will not care at all (and AI generated music will stop sounding like a shitty 96kbps mp3).

It's like food, if you don't put law to protect people, big company will serve you shit or plastic marketed as food and if there's enough sugar in it, people would consume it anyway because most don't want to spend some time checking the ingredient (some would say it's already like that, but without law it would be really worst).

But the same way you can still eat shit and cook it the way you want at home, this law doesn't block you from generating AI music, or even release it as your own or some fantasy AI artist or whatever people do with that. There is no censorship or anything there, just a limitation or what can be accessible. Billboard are nothing more that an ad for popular music, so it just like cigarette can't advertise in some country, that doesn't mean they can't exist.

I think this is pretty funny, from a story on AP News about the same subject: https://apnews.com/article/australi...rts-ban-aria-9bfb0c91166ae4405a6df1a3c4891687

"The crackdown comes as a variation of Madonna’s pop hit “Like a Prayer” created by an Australian producer using AI-generated vocals and drums has spent 16 weeks in the Australian top 20, stoking debate about generative AI’s place in music. It peaked at number two on the Australian Record Industry Association’s top 20 Australian singles chart in May and remained in fourth place on Tuesday."

I disagree. You may be correct regarding background music in supermarkets, elevators or in advertisement, but the motivation to listen to music goes beyond letting pleasing sound enter your ears.
A.I. music is just the logical conclusion of a trend that started with the possibility to record sound about a hundred years ago. Before A.I. there were already billions of musical pieces for any genre and sub genre that nobody could ever possibly digest in a single lifetime. There has already been uncountable pieces of classical music that dwarf most of the stuff that's produced nowadays, and still people want to create and listen to new music.
In my opinion, that's because people are looking for something that has meaning to them. Something that is considered 'great' by a musical elite doesn't have any value for you, if it doesn't have meaning. I know exactly what the music that I love means to me, and I know when I find new music that means something to me. That's how we filter the overwhelming mass of existing music and manage to find something that gives us joy, and that's why it is still possible to make a living as a musician, because if your creation means something to you, it will mean something to other people. Imagine your favourite musician had given up on music, because he thought it was pointless seeing the incredible amount that already exists and the even more incredible amount that will be shat out by A.I.
A.I. music doesn't have any meaning and will therefore never replace music by actual people. Not because it's better or worse, but because it's just meaningless and boring.

I agree with the meaning people find in music, but that doesn't mean they really care about how it's made. They do in a sense, but don't bother to look in the details. Just look at all those fake old soul AI track on youtube, and their comment section, some people seems to really connect with some song.

People will always make music (or any other art that AI is suppose to replace), but it's not really what's in stakes here. It's more about the business side of things. If we let AI be used just like a normal tool, it will be use as an artist replacement for everything that can generate money. People will connect to song, no matter if they are AI or not, and if there's no warning label or something like that, they will connect to fake personna (which in a way is ok, as people can already connect with anime character for exemple). The same way kids connect with AI cartoon and don't care about how (or for what purpose) it is made, they do because it's made to catch them, and the social algorythme work in that way too.

People who defend AI music always use the drum machine, synth or sampler comparison as to make it usable as a tool, and surely there's good tool that can be taken from AI, but the generative part is not something that will replace one job. It's a thing that was build to replace every artistic job, from the drum programmer to the engineer asistant and everyone involve in one way or another in a recording/bedroom studio.

And people will not care about that, because they connect just with the "final product". The music industry is already in majority lead by money and investment, but still, there's some creative part in it, some artistic input, from the singer to the mix engineer. If there's no rule or limit from the people who live from this industry (the one who do care about human input), then it will be only about money and algorythme, even worst than what we already living in with social media, cause it will be just AI music. The industry don't care about musician feeling, they want to make money, and AI was fed with all musicians feeling already, so they can use it to fake it. It will not make great music, but it will be good enough, until no one know better and so it will become great for some people who don't know the original reference those AI model use.

People will still connect with old music, or actual real music, because it will not disapear (although most of people listen music only via streaming, so it could disappear), but if we let generative AI in, there's a new generation that could only know that kind of stuff. It's not really about us (by us, I mean every people over 10yo), it's about future generation. If we consider AI music like we consider human music, future generation will not care about the meaning of those "old" song, they will only care about AI music that big company feed them, or in the best case, AI music they made themself only to express themself for themself, which destroy completly the purpose of making music to share a collective experience.

Big tech company already control how we listen to music, for now it's like we have the possibility to eat a Michelin 3 star dishes in every McDonalds, with the possibility to also eat the dryest Mcdo burger right after. At some point, if we let them do whatever they want, they can stop serving those fancy food and only let us with the trash Mcdonald that use almost the same ingredient, but in a more industrial way. And sure, cooking should be accessible to everyone, but everyone should have the possibility to learn to cook fancy food (with try and error), but if you get rewarded with the quick dopamine rush everytime you make a shitty dry burger, then you will never have a great meal. And it's not a problem, as long as we don't present shitty food on the same menu as the fancy food.

(sorry for the food analogy, I'm hungry, if you didn't get Mcdonald is the streaming service, fancy food is whatever great band you think is the best and Mcdo food is AI music, the menu is the top 100 or streaming playlist :))

Go ahead and turn off your track automations while you're at it. There are real musicians out there who don't need the computer to adjust their volume and tone. And don't use photoshop - if you can't draw or paint then you have no business making art.

Glad u posted this. This song is the main reason they started that law.

The artist had the concept to flip the classic Madonna song into a modern dance version which has been an upward trend in dance music since

It isn't on the charts that long because its AI. Thats just the medium he used to translate his idea.

A lot of those songs are popular vocal sample + a handful of splice loops and some creative spices.

AI is just the next evolution of that. But the core of what makes a lot of these work is the use of the orig sample.

    Stupid is as stupid does.
AI is here. People with no creative talent and even less conscience will give the same amount of f**ks stupid people normally give.
The value of creativity will drop to zero, and one of the foundations of being human will be outsourced to non-human scraping/robbing AI data centers that churn out garbage.
"The charts" have been a farce for many many decades, so no change there.
How funny would it be if AI music lawyers could accurately identify the musical thefts and litigate?
Very human actually. Just no humans involved.
I'm having a bad dream about how they killed music. Hopefully I'll wake up soon.
