Jesus, I hope the absolute arrogance in this post is supposed to be ironic.
I'm not even an American, but everyone uses the word pick when speaking English, I didn't hear the word plectrum until a few years ago despite posting in guitar forums for over a decade. Prince using it one time indicates nothing. Having two words for one thing does not indicate difference. I imagine Americans have a different word for Banjo picks.

Anyway, just to make this shitpost thread related

Myself and other artists including Americans have been using if for over 40 years. It would have been longer if I started playing earlier!
I was purely illustrating that Prince is US and used the word plectrum! So it DOES indicate something.
Interesting subjective experience you have had.
No they call them picks. Not plectrums. That's why I linked to a US site!
And the two words are in existence due to the difference we are talking about (this is initially English rather than US English, since ours was first and we seeded them!) but pick is a very common term for plectrum now, I admit.
    Particularly in the US.

Edit: for a funky blue plectrum, I can be very 'picky'! lol! :) Chill!

Err, not necessarily. 'Pick' is the first translation shown for the German word 'Plektrum'. 'Plectrum' is the third and 'quill' the second. :winker:

Try playing banjo or certain 12 string techniques without the finger and thumb picks and you will bleed!
And we are talking about English and English US.
The word would have been introduced to you and in this context.
Edit: and of course I'n not ruling out that the word may be a mixture of Germanic and Latin originally or whatever, but regards the advent of the electric guitar and where it came from, appropriated or not, the word is in context of playing the guitar.
I know there are prior instruments that use pluck or pick devices too, so it wouldn't surprise me if we took an old Germanic word!
Two different things, two different words, at the end of the day.

Pick and plectrum are interchangeable. Hopefully we learn something new every day, such as finger picks are used on the index, middle and ring fingers for many while playing the banjo, a thumb pick of course on the thumb. Lots of people use finger and thumb picks while playing the guitar also.

Honestly not sure if you're trolling or not. Either way you should stop, because you're coming off as what you Brits might call a 'twat'.

Which is the same meaning as 'cunt'. Cheers for that. And try and chill out, ffs! lol
If it's any consolation, I know you are now.
    I don't troll.
Just responding to your comment to me.
    And correcting a few things.

No, that's not possible! Two words can't possibly refer to the same thing!

Non-Brits use the word pick, and "thumbpicks" or "fingerpicks" for the banjo ones, not understanding this simply shows ignorance of the guitar world. Get on with it.
