As a recording, mixing, and mastering engineer, I consider high-end "audiophile" systems to be?

Sure, if you have a concert hall at home you'll need very large speakers.
But if not some sheets from actual proper monitor designers can help. https://www.genelec.com/correct-monitors
The rest can be measured. And if the measurements present a very "clean" picture the monitor should be well designed. :dunno:

and well.. im not sure what the genelec sub is for, its not a very good footrest. its in the way of my HH pedal

Be it directly or by Omission,
Headphone and Monitor manufacturers are Lying to you most of the time..

They will tell you the specs of basic things like:
Frequency Range, Impedance.. and Total Harmonic Distortion or SPL if you're lucky...

And then some ambiguous snake-oil stuff like:
"crystal clear highs, earth shattering lows, sexy-warm mids, rocket-deflecting SPL, uber-micro detailed" etc..

But they will never show you a proper plotted Graph of the actual Frequency Response, FR related Harmonic Dist, CSD etc

In part because there's no proper Universal Standard to adhere to,
like say the FR Harman Target which is proprietary..

So there's no real standard point of reference.. But if Graphs were the norm,
manufacturers will surely mess them up to show a plot that made their product look more Favorable/appealing.

And this applies for Harmonic Dist and CSD too..

Besides of Frequency Response and Harmonic Distortion,
one of the important factors not usually considered, or even referenced by manufacturers is CSD..

Here's a great analysis of some well known monitors c.a. 2005
    https://dt7v1i9vyp3mf.cloudfront.net/assetlibrary/n/ns10m.pdf

Even tho the article is centered around the famous/infamous NS10,
there's a very comprehensive comparison with some of the biggest names/models at the moment.

Very insightful stuff, even after all these years..

It is pure physics. Standing waves breaking, inner reflections and resonances damping, mass preventing micro movements of the whole enclosure, thick enclosure walls to prevent sound penetrating from inside to outside etc. ask for critical min. volume and mass. It can not be overcome by any tricks or 'design', the same as a child can not lift 100 kg.
And 80 liter enclosures can be put into a 20 m2 room.
And more about relation of the size to standing waves, reflections and resonances - just try to play trumpet in a very small room and in some large hall. The same happens inside the box, and the loudspeaker membranes are in the same position as your ears.
