Arturia Pigments Play: the free player version of the multi-engine synth - August 5, 2026

Arturia Pigments Play is the new free player version of the Pigments multi-engine Synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows.

Pigments is Arturia’s flagship Synthesizer plugin, featuring six distinct synthesis methods. Last December, Arturia released version 7 of the synth as a free update with great new additions.

One of these was the newly designed Play section, where you can play and edit sounds without delving deeply into the synth. Without announcement, Arturia has now launched Pigments Play, a free player version of its synth based on this section.



Arturia Pigments Play
Pigments Play is a new free Synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows. The main idea of this new free version is all about playing. It’s designed to browse presets quickly and perform simple sound shaping if needed.

At the core, Arturia Pigments Play uses the complete multi-synthesis engine but gives users a limited number of parameters. For this, the developers have taken the Play section from the full version and packaged it into a free plugin.

Arturia ships it with 100 curated presets created by professional sound designers. They cover modern pop, R&B, garage, house, drum and bass, trap, ambient, and other production styles.

These can be reshaped through a focused, audio-reactive interface that comes with different animated visuals. You can also deactivate the visualizer. The depth of sound customization is greater than you might initially think.



Sound Customization
It’s divided into two levels. First, you can customize sounds with four macro controls: brightness, timbre, time, and movement. They are assigned differently per preset.

These four are perfect controls if you want to quickly adjust sounds. But it also goes a bit deeper. Arturia Pigments Play also comes with simplified oscillator, filter, envelope, and FX sections.

In the oscillator section, you can change the synthesis engine: virtual analog, sample, wavetable, granular, modal, and harmonic. Each engine comes with a few tweakable controls like volume or FM amount. Not bad for a player.

Then, the filter section includes two tweakable filters with all 68 filter modes of the full Pigments version, with cutoff and resonance controls. Pigments has a powerful modulation engine. The Play version, however, also gives you control over the amp ADSR envelope.

To refine your sounds, it comes with three FX slots with 20 different effect algorithms and a few controls. That’s a lot of control options for a simple player version. Full control over the engine, including the sequencer, is not available in this free version.

Further, the Pigments Play comes with a preset browser where you can browse sounds with filters. 100 sounds are included. Additional sound expansions can be purchased via the internal store.

First Impression
It’s a common practise that companies like to release player versions of their flagship synths. So this release isn’t very surprising, but the timing is. It came completely out of the blue without any press release.

Users get a great option here to access the Pigments sounds without buying the full version. They not only get 100 sounds but also a lot of control options over them. This turns the 110 sounds into a few thousand if you try all the variations. Not bad for a player version.

Arturia Pigments Play is available now as a free download. It runs as a VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.

Excellent, thanks for the heads-up. Nice alternative to Analog Lab. Shame it won't load from Lab but you can't have everything when it's free

 

I guess an update to lab will fix this sooner then later

 

Neat little update to get more of us on the bandwagon but for us who have pigments already it’s nothing much… this introduction doesn’t affect me in any meaningful way but I should get back to pigments cause it’s been a while

 

If you already have Full Pigments this install will overwrite and erase it.
