Are the general public's tastes changeable?

Discussion in 'Education' started by Radioactive Fallout, Sep 18, 2019.

  1. Conservatory tastes VS. The general public's tastes

Unfortunately we are living in an era that the public interests prominently dominate the art world and prevent it from being revolutionized.

Is there any chance to change their tastes and save the art (esp. the music)?

I can only tell you about an experience that took place in 1979 in France with the same question in mind.
They played on one of the most listened radio a Bethoven piece with the same frequency and same hours when the number one hits where played.
After one week this piece had triplicated sales.

To all off topic commenters, if you are not interested, just pass your way.
This is a legit question, and there is no reason to fill this thread with denigrating comments.

    Hi!
I've been watching a progressive decadence in music since new century started off. Why is it so? Think of mass media companies, who choose 'sellness' instead of creativity. Everything is marketing. The Olymoon's 1979's France anecdote should help you with that question: OF COURSE. General people's tastes are changeables as long as they're controlled by advertising and its tricks.

    hi,
art does not need to be saved, it is education, musical in this case that must be treated.
It's a bit like cooking, everyone eats MacDo, but good cooking, simple or elaborate, exists and will always exist!

The more data that is collected from the masses the easier it becomes to predict what will sell in the largest numbers, and the largest numbers generate the largest profits.

Average "taste" must by definition exist in the middle (68%) of the bell shaped curve, therefore so must most of the music be aimed if profit is to be maximised.

question #1 Are the general public's tastes changeable?
Answer: yes, continuous pressure is applied to the consumer, with the aim of keeping him unsatisfied and continuing to buy what he does not yet own

    Question #2

Is there any chance to change their tastes and save the art (esp. The music)?
Answer: It's up to us: it's the duty that all of us artists have

I don't really have much to help, as i am not involved in producing art except for myself, but each time I read the post a question comes to me: Save the art from what? Isn't the question posed more in terms of saving society from itself?
And I wonder: Why should an artist care?
But I am an outsider and not much of an artist, and not interested in achieving recognition or making money...
Yes, the ability to engage in artistic activities DOES rely on the culture in some ways, even for me.
If one is starving there is less time and energy for art, and the more complicated the art the more reliance on culture.
I think it would be NICE if society liked what I consider better art, but I think it is too complicated to implement any "top-down" method ... except military force...

So, in the end I think it is up to individuals to strive to produce, and making use of bottom-up methods seems the way.
What Olymoon mentioned seems one way - direct contact with those who present it, and that now includes all internet methods.
You are artists and I am not, so I expect you to come up with creative ways to popularize the good stuff :)
If the "stuff" is good, even an uneducated and unaccustomed society may respond!

the idea that the listening public are separate from us is not acceptable.... the fact is as a species we are an infestation.....over consuming and voracious.....our fate is tied to how nature chooses to exterminate us

Saying "we are living in an era that the public interests prominently dominate the art world and prevent it from being revolutionized" does not make it fatcual. This is just your claim, not a fact!

Where do you draw this conviction from? Where are the examples of art dominated by public interests? What's your concept of art?
I could go an and on for days deconstructing this, but all I am asking is:

Was there ever a time when art was not created as a reaction to life and public interests in general?

    Really,
    I didn't know that anecdote.
Which radio was it on? Do you remember that?

    I'm not very surprised.
When you think that mediocre music can sell, at least a little, when it is regularly broadcast, quality music, whatever its musical genre, will probably find its audience if it is regularly broadcast.
After that, I think that some musical styles are less easily accessible to a person who has no musical culture.
But culture is not an innate thing, it is the result of learning.

In summary, I believe that if there were a greater diversity proposed, there would be an audience for it. This would not prevent certain musical styles from predominating (because they are in the mood of the times, or easier to access, etc.) but it would probably considerably change the music market and the level of general musical culture.
