Fun fact: Apple started using angle sensor instead of the simple hall effect sensors for checking if the notebook is opened or closed. So, if this sensor fails, your system can't enter sleep (unless you tell it to) and (even worse) can't wake when in sleep/hibernation already.

And these angle sensor on M1s start to fail one by one… so you can replace them, right? Of cooooourse… I mean Apple is all pro repair now, right? Nope! These are not just some chips you can order online and replace it and everything back to normal again – nonono. Unlike the previously used hall effect sensors, these need to be programmed and of course no one has access to the software.

    This is Apple for ya!

They've always been pretty hardcore with that, but now that they make literally everything I'm also curious.
I'm not discarding anything. Like, say, RAM requirements: 17GB+ ? Why not?

I wonder if they can pull off another stunt like the iPad OS that slowed down any iPad that wasn't new.

at least it is possible to upgrade a m1 mbp to 32gb; but quick Google shows it's $400! for the extra 16. Which is at least a little less insulting than the $600 upgrade to take a Mini from 8gb to 16gb. It can seem like it doesn't matter, but it forces more work back to the CPU filling and clearing the buffer. Try switching a Falcon2 (as example) preset during playback of any decent sized project, and it will halt playback with resources error message. So inevitably you start bouncing in place, and it's a very easy way to end up with a bunch of over-compression. Not that you guys are having a serious conversation. just sayin. i'd upgrade the ram before replacing one for a newer m3/etc cpu.

I agree. I'll take it where I left couple pages ago due to some soon-not-anymore-member.
With the also huge RAM prices at least they have an excuse. Since it's embedded on the main chip and all that jazz. As fascinating tech-wise as troublesome for upgrades or even choices.

While I can empathize with the tactics, we on the generic PC hardware side have win10/11 - the two latest pieces of AD/SPY/"goon-ware" from mickey soft. Although I will say placing actual hardware circuits inside the boxen is an insidious move for an OEM and should result in a complete boycott of said OEM.

For a couple of decades, at least for video and audio, there has been no real/true advantages for either hardware platform so it basically came down to what one was more comfortable with platform wise. With these latest developments it seems that apple has made that decision for you - use their products and become an unpaid, virtual representative for Apple in every way shape form. They dictate what software you run? They dictate when you "update/upgrade"? They must know what you run software wise and when? Their new slogan should be - "Apple... Where 1984 and big brother came to rest"...

At least on the winblows side these software systems (win10 and lower) can be manipulated (with good deal of preparation on the users part) and be rendered safe for users to use in an inter-networked environment so that you don't become a unwitting dupe for mickey-soft (or whoever else would be trying to listen) and you can run whatever software you dam well please. My latest build for media production has not one i-lok, dumbass dongle OR the internet plugged into it and it never will. Praise the scene!
