As a drum VSTi SD3 has an insane amount of control not to mention expansions in varied genres. It's very hard to beat...
But It shines only in the hands of those who has good knowledge in programming drum beats.

But Addictive drums 2 is a great alternative, ready to go and is fantastic sounding too.

 

Short answer: no, imho.

there are tons of midi packs, no need to program beats from scratch (I play drums and I have a Roland E-kit but for production I often find more convenient to just use SD3 midis).

For me it's more a question of having good knowledge of how to make the kits sound like you want: in other words have the proper mixing skills (if you aren't satisfied with SD3 or 3rd party presets).

SD3 it's a really GREAT software, I improved my mixing skills with it that I translated when mixing real drums: I'd look no further
