Hi , i used to own DP ver 2.75 way back in late 90s, then moved to PC cakewalk; i ve forgot how DP functioned......my question is can you record audio over old soundbite? i mean like sound on sound in cakewalk or any modern DAW ,seems like i can only set a punch in record in order to do continuous recording on same track

you can do either, depending on what record mode you have it in. You can either overwrite audio into the existing audio data you already have on the track, or record a new take which is over it but non-destructively.

Motu have their own YT channel with 300+ videos on it if you don't want to read the manual: https://www.youtube.com/@motuTV

Thx for reply, i d looked into motu tv, all YT videos, the menu ,even motu nation, can't find how; on an existing clip, i can't hear the original each time i record, no matter the input monitor button is on/off, it s a really turn off

    or:

here's how Digital Performer (DP) handles recording over existing audio:

Yes, you can record sound-on-sound (i.e., overdub) in Digital Performer without using punch-in, but it depends on how your track and take settings are configured.
️ How Sound-on-Sound Works in DP:

By default, when you record audio onto a track that already contains a soundbite, DP creates a new take rather than overdubbing into the existing one. This helps prevent destructive edits.
But if you're looking for true sound-on-sound layering (like analog tape, or Cakewalk's “Sound on Sound (Blend)” mode), here's what to do:

To Layer Audio (Sound-on-Sound Style) in DP:
    1. Set the track to allow multiple soundbites (don’t enable auto-take or comping mode unless you're specifically building takes).

    2. In the Tracks Overview or Sequence Editor, just arm the track and record again — DP will stack the new audio above or below the existing one depending on your view.

    3. Nothing is erased unless you set it to overwrite or you manually delete it.
    ️ Useful Settings to Check:
    • Go to Setup > Preferences > Audio Recording:
      • Make sure “Allow overdubbing” is enabled (if available in your version).
    • In the track’s Record Mode, select "Overdub" (instead of "Replace" or "Punch In").
    Key Point:
If you're only seeing Punch-In work, you may be in a mode like “Replace” or “Auto Punch.” Just switch to regular Overdub recording, and you’ll be able to record continuously over the existing track without deleting or muting what's already there.
