what are your favorite libraries for working with film?

please recommend any websites or libraries you guys like.

 

Boom and the old Hollywood Edge stuff seems to have anything I ever need... Nothing beats doing it yourself in the field though.

How are you capturing the sound? I've always been interested in this.

 

If you're looking for something specific try pond5. I have a few terabytes of sfx from years of doing film scores and Foley. It takes time to build a comprehensive library and even then you'll audition hundreds of similar sounds and find none are right. I just couldn't get the right sound of a bowl of ramen noodles pushed across a marble counter top. So as others have said, I grabbed my mic and took it into the kitchen and recorded a heavy bowl being pushed. It had no noodles in it. Oh God, don't tell the director, he'll want his money back.
Tell me what FX you need and I'm happy to share if I have what want.

 

Now there is a sound that shouldn't exist. So disrespectful to ramen... Can I have the director's email, I'd like to send a complaint.

 

Hey! I can't believe I found it. Must be an different edit. He took the bowl sound out. I. Am. Livid!!! Get my agent on the phone! What? I don't have an agent. Then get my dentist on the phone. Actually it is there. Just mixed lower. Cancel that call to the dentist.

Stereo shotgun, dead cat and battery powered recorder. Throw it up and record.... Lots of things you hear in movies are not even anything remotely close or related to what you see... Experiment.

Do you have any experience with subscription based sample libraries ?

I did an internship a while ago, and saw one of the sound designers constantly use this online service I believe they paid monthly for it.
