So weve all seen it. The threads asking about 'What the hell is that sound?' well heres another one.

This is a sound i frequently hear in 'witch house' genre or chill or ambi-electronic. Its kind of like a 'found sound' or dust-tape kind of sound. I will show a couple examples. But i hear it often . Its kind of a nice atmosphere or off-tempo/off-beat drum type sound. Like pots and pans style.

^ That kind of machine sounding loop on the right and left pan independent.

^ @~2:17 (overall and excellent song and well worth the listen past the mark i have given. Shit really picks up and has life)

Theres another example by Soosh - Friday Feelings at like 0:10 onward. Theres more examples of that kind of sound but i dont want to overload the point. Ive been in touch with Sun Glitters about other things but never asked about that sound.

This kind of mindful/thought expressive ambient style is what i produce myself, but as i said in another thread, learning some techniques from the masters and going your own direction can lead to some marvelous locations.

musicradar released a pack which has a lot of dry organic sounds, it is exactly what you think, like a lot of foley and pan hitting style sounds. Its then layered, granulized and reverbed. the pattern and syncopation of each hit is really a thing of wonder in tracks like these, and it does take a lot of practice to get all of these layered natural sounds to flow in a humanized fashion.

the sample pack which i use to emulate sounds like this is real world recordings, anywhere, anything, as well as the musicradar realworld drum samples. ;D

Could you give a link to the sample pack? i have a good amount of real world recordings and i can always set up my recording gear and do some myself. I just want to understand what it is and how. Its just such an interesting ambiance and how it fits and the emotions it gives. Its almost an unsettling sound, but the rhythm is just something different.

Something like 'Bibio - A tout a l'heure'. They used hedge trimmers as a kind of add in sound which you can distinctly hear is different from other sounds, but blends so nice. Another real mindful and fun song.

SIDE note: Like your 'Lost Time' track. Im not one for DnB but it was real nice. As for Araxis i like that style. Definitely on point. You should check out 'Neat Beats' and their tracks Graffiti on Tuesday Night and Why Wolud We Need Brakes. Something different. Not so much trip hop as truly 'neat beats'. You may like xxyyxx or teebs as well.

Cheers for listening to my stuff, really appreciated. Yeah I love their style and man! This style is way more abstract then the normal trip hop style that i listen to but its still sweet. Galimatias and Sorrow also do a lot of intricate sample work that follow this style of sound, but their take has a bit more of a garage/hard hitting beat influence.

    Galimatias -Backseat Bingo
The percussive is really crispy on this one for example

    Sorrow - Lover's Charm
This one is more layered and hard to hear individually but there is definitely some of that sound there. Is also takes some nice burial/four tet sounds/ techniques with a twist

You can always use drum samples for this, if you want a more 'traditional' timbre. Sidestick snares, closed hi-hats or electronic drum clicks/hits/... And then, small percussion or small metallic things (chopped loops or recordings). Or a combo (normal drumkit with spoons for hats etc.).

    Here's an instrument for Kontakt: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=371189 / http://free.chokehold.net/tiny-metal-impact/

Record matchboxes, chains, tin cans with some junk in them (tossing, scraping, shaking, hitting). Record several fingersnaps, claps, etc.
Then pitch the samples down in your sampler. Filter/EQ to taste.

I love found sounds and foley.

+ on Sorrow. Heard a bootleg remix of Without you by sorrow. Im doing a smashed up version of that original song. Im not one for remixes (or the original artist) so instead i destroy a song, slow it down, mess with effects and then use it as the underlying ambiance of a track.

Four tet - Small Talk remix is a prime example of some crazy samples being uses as percussion.

I´m with Baxter. I love to include those elements in my music also.
I don´t suggest to use 'already prepared/chopped' stuff from libraries here, you will find more suitable stuff in foley packs and slicing from different sources or making raw recordings of common elements by yourself. Already chopped or processed stuff tends to kill the mood, and the random and off-sync vibe is what makes the sound special. There´re tons of coins, keys, paper, and other sounds out there. For instant preview and download -if I´m looking for something really specific- Freesound.org is nice, otherwise I just tweak samples made for film post production. Be careful, you could become very picky following this path  ...and an advice: try everything in reverse. Everything sounds great in reverse. *yes*
