    Hi everyone.
Recently, when I was making a new track, I got an error message within the lines of "A critical error has occured. Please restart Ableton and look in the crash dump for assistance".
Well, I restarted Ableton, and still got the same message.
I then restarted my computer, only to get a blue screen with the error message "Bad system config info".
After that, pc restart, and another blue screen "Hard drive fail".
I took my repair disk and attempted to fix it, but only ended up formatting the drive, and loosing 8 years of projects, and 40GB of samples and plugins.
I've now fixed my computer, and hopefully this won't happen again, and I am looking to buy an external drive.

    Thanks for listening :)

always make backups of your music. always. every week. every 3 days. at least ever 2 weeks.
keep the harddrive maybe you can usa a "data recovery software to recover your songs" if the hard drives make sa strange noise.. don't turn it on.. if it does not make a strange noise.. posibilities that you can recover your songs are preatty much 99%.

if it makes a strange click or noise the harddrive, then you have to send it to an expert.
if not... you can make a "deep scan" of the harddrive.. with differents programs.. to see which one "shows" the hard drive correctly. with the "folder structure"

but first make a clone .iso of the harddrive. before scanning.. then ,, you scan the .iso file.

oh.. did read that you formated the harddrive is it harder to recover.. but you could try,
don't write a single bit more on that hard drive.. keep it. as it is and first make a .iso clone first.

I have recover files after formatting a hard drive.. myself.

i wont even get into how you could not have a backup with "eight years of projects".
you knew this was going to happen.
    so congrats!

this time dont have os and your projects on the same drive.
that way the os drive can go to hell and you just reinstall and go on.

if its a laptop then you need to have a backup but we now know you like living on the edge so..

Just for your information, there are pro software apps for recovering data from hard disk with serious problems.
You can recover your data even after formating your disk ... but only if you don´t write any data on it.
Remember : only thing you don´t have to do is to overwrite any data on the disk, wich means that once the problem happens DON´T TRY TO FIX YOUR DISK by yourself : use one of those apps ...

You´ll need another hard disk with the operating system and one of that recovering data apps for recovering the data of your disk.

    Regards.

Don't feel too despondent, the first 8 years are mainly used for practice. It's the next 5 years that are really important!

Same sort of thing happened to me awhile back, lost years worth of projects, almost brought me to tears....couldn't figure out what to do, lost all wav files, sample chops - distraught.... posted what happened on here and someone told me how to open up the project files, so i could view the exact names of all files used in each project, took a awhile but it made me focus on only the ones i finished and wanted to finish,:mates: still got about 350 half finished/probably never will finish project files just sitting on a separate drive.. this kind of set back can really make you step your game up.. hope you get it going

dunno your bandwidth but saving/syncing into the cloud (for ex. dropbox) is also an option

Hi! Thank you all for your answers, and I was very stupid for not doing backups.
But well, I had so much unnescesary things that I didn't even care about, so now I can start fresh with new stuff.

To quote everyone who suggested data recovery:
The hard drive is completely broken, took it to a tech expert, some magnet line is burned from inside, so is impossible for recovery.
I've also bought a external hdd for backups, so this won't happen again.

    Thanks!

@iamshio OK, a restart may be a chance to do things even better :winker:
Disk errors are normal these days because of density of disks.
If your money allows it's a good idea to sync the worthy data to a second disk or - best - a small NAS with a RAID5. There are a lot of solutions for automatic backups. You need to define a backup scheme only once and the rest is done by the software. I do full backups on a daily basis. And I needed to restore several times in the past. So I learned to love backups

I feel for you... but here's an exercise for you.
Recreate your works from 8 years ago with the knowledge that you have now.
Now call it your first EP.
