And The Thunder Rolls...

She could feel the vibrations even when it was not much more than an unusual cloud formation far off in the distance. As it crept closer it became almost bone chilling and distorted to the point that the full cup of cold coffee from the night before was spilling over the lip of the cup onto the floor and the sound began to resonate deep in her skull. She hadn't heard anything like this before. Otherworldly and almost visceral and alien. The view from the small window though was totally awe inspiring. All around the desert landscape was bathed in a luminescent dark blue light tinged with streaks of glowing gold. The evening setting sun was up there somewhere, she knew, trying to break through the strange atmosphere. It was both beautiful and yet truly terrifying. There was no way to outrun or escape this one. She'd experienced many storms in the past but this was something off the scale. It grew closer and closer, louder and louder. Strangely there wasn't a single drop of rain or gust of wind but the thunder was almost incessant. Loud claps tailing off into long thunderous rolls before piecing the air again with another bone chilling boom. This was surely the Big One her grandfather had always warned would come one day. He said nothing would withstand it. Nothing could survive. Would she?.....

You've got the prelude nailed. I'd go easy on the celestial voices around the 3 min mark since the rest is original and haunting - you definately do not want any sign of Kitaro around the joint. Spook it up. You're almost there.
