I enjoy checking the chords and structure of songs in Hookpad

But i was wondering if there was another similar source, not subscription based hopefully

Ive searched but i get mostly links to software to write songs and that is not really what im after, i want a database where to look up pop songs chords and melody notes etc.

is there any other such resource? cheers

One thing that can contribute to that puzzle is to download a midi file or a guitar tab for the song.
At least then you have a representation of the song which is
    - hopefully accurate - depending on the quality of the midi file or tab file.
    - easily analysable by you - just scrutinise it in your DAW or notation program or GuitarPro, etc
    - easily analysable by software - and usually that's easier and more reliable than with software that's trying to analyse audio.

For almost any song that's popular, someone on YouTube will be offering to show you how to play it,
so they will of course show you the chords.

And there are still good old fashioned song books that usually combine chord charts with simplified music notation.

I think we're spoilt for choice these days - which is nice.

hi @Ad Heesive, i agree, i do that too.
problem with "books" is that its often the same songs and more odd club tracks, disco, 80s 90s is not that common.
wish there was like some place with proper midi.

I think your best bet for what you are trying to accomplish might be to create a really good Google search string, so that you could paste in the artist-title and then other operators to refine those results to where you end up with your chord progression information; if it is to be found somewhere on the internet that google can see. Take a look at something like this list of Advanced Operators to see if it might help you out: https://ahrefs.com/blog/google-advanced-search-operators/

Hooktheory is quite unique, and you only need to analyse a few songs to get the gist of things. Then I'd recommend Scaler and a midi keyboard to experiment with your own ideas.

Don't know but Hookpad looks to me like some kind of BandInTheBox or similar.

Sure it's a very simple software, but still it's nice to put in a few chords... :keys:
I did and just the way the parts are arranged made me think of BITB.

By the way it has an acceptable GUI (whereas BITB's is horrible :snuffy:).

There's no alternative inasmuch as I know.

BTW, songs don't have highly elaborate structures. You can discover them even by inattentive listening. They have thin bottom layers, the only thing that distinguishes them are their shiny thick surfaces.

i found this to be simple and accessible (online) for a quick check, thats all.
