    Hello all,

I've been looking at videos on YouTube about building acoustic panels and bass traps. And most people recommend either foam, rockwool or fibreglass panels. I am happy to use some foam for sides or ceiling clouds and behind speakers; but I'd like to have slightly larger bass traps and it is really hard to find rockwool or fibreglass panels in Melbourne (how weird). Or maybe they are called something else here...

Anyway, I am wondering, would any of you any other alternative? I know polystyrene is definitely out of the question. But how about glasswool insulation bats? Like these ones?

I am happy to build these myself.

The layout I am working with is this one:

The size of the studio/study area is approximately 5.8m x 3.8m

    Thanks for any advice.

Hehe yes those things is used for isolation in buildings you dont need that in mMelbourne i guess!! *yes* There is AC more important
It is also used in the soil under the roads and under the buildings so when it is -30 outside the heat will stay in the building and the asphalt
on the roads wont crack '¨But as far as i know they have real winter time in Australia i have seen skiing competitions in mountains in Australia so their must be places where they have real winters
Maybe in that part of the country you could find fibreglass??
I know people who have tried styrofoam dont know if it works

Thanks for the reply mate. I have heard mixed reviews about the styrofoam. Some love it and swear by it, some hate, it...

And yeah, it's fucking freezing here right now...!

    Hello Demon,

i chose wood-wool panels for my selfmade absorbers and can highly recommend them ! Their absorptivity is as good as rockwool and the like, if not better,
plus, what i think is most important - they're harmless to your health. Another eco-alternative are hemp, flax or cellulose panels.
Organic insulation might be a bit more expensive, but it's definitely worth it...

Styrofoam is a complete myth, it doesn't work for absorbing or soundproofing.
    I used these ones Here
Made basic frames and fabric covers, they work great.

Auralex products work and are fire retardant. Yes, they cost more. I use the tiles where I want them, and have folding screens with some glued on to I move around where I need them. I put more tiles in my closet/vocal booth than needed, because they also help keep sound out. If you have a fire, the smoke from some burning foams and plastics will kill you before you wake up. I think safety matters even in the home studio. Cables can be trip hazards. Keep them off the floor or out of foot traffic if you can. Electrical devices and toxic burning foam products together? I would just rather not create that situation if I can help it.
