I use Melodyne and Neutone as VSTs - also the Fadr website sometimes.

None of these render perfect results, but they get you very close.

i detect root key with virtual dj and chordu (this works, if there is a song on youtube and in their database.), then i use mvsep to stem split and then in the DAW i play along and use melodyne to get the chords and the melody.

Playing over the audio with a similar sound, you can guess its the right chord/melody.

Still wish, i could get it by ears ... but it still takes me ages.

Melodyne and RipX are very good, but if the piece of music isn't clean, then expect lots of ghost notes. Melodyne gives you a clearer picture of what's being played, then you can attempt to simply play it in instead of spending time cleaning it up, once you pick out few notes, you're almost there.

Somebody in the forum suggested a trick that helps, i forget who, so sorry i cant credit. The trick is to choke/ gate/ volume automate tha audio first so that the notes are short and clean, otherwise you get all of these random filler notes. With the choked notes you are more likely to get just the chords / notes you need. you will still need to tweak the midi by hand, but this helps a lot.

Without a doubt the best audio to midi converter is a transcriptionist musician.
Practice can make you one of them.

The Plugin Guy has something to say about NeuralNote.

Cleaning up the MIDI is definitely the answer. I was doing a hip hop mix with an organ sample that was just lackluster - had the feel but not the sonics. Wanted to lay a vsti underneath to supplement the sound. I put it in RipX and got the MIDI, but definitely had to clean it up. Melodyne would have been my default choice- tried RipX to put it through its paces, I was happy with the results.

Still Melodyne for me, but i've tried the others with Mac versions available and they are ok too.

To clean up some of the ghost notes you may get in it, you can put an Antares Auto-tune instance as an insert effect before Melodyne. If tails of notes are an issue, you can insert a Transient Designer plugin before Melodyne also. You just adjust the tails by adjusting the hold, decay, or sustain parameter of the transient designer. They can use various terms for the parameter to shorten notes, but it can help if notes run together.

If ghost notes are really all over the place in the Midi, adding a midi instrument and an arpeggiator with a very fast rate can help bounce a cleaner copy of the notes in the stem. Sometimes you have to experiment or play it yourself, as already suggested.
