The bloated software is the virus inside the legit copies. AZ stuff is cleaner, faster, and cheaper.

 

Keep your sensative stuff on a bootable usb device running linux.

 

My pc got infected with a Virut CE once, even a format and windows reinstallation couldn't eradicate it. It was in a KG for a data recovery software.

 

This is the best for a reluctant virus

 

lucky not to have it. i was looking up spme processes from task manager and google bring me up to this totaly infected scenario. i had no pc for 5-6 years now and getting started again in 2020... in the old days i did not even run av, everything was safe, internet banking was not existing and crypto was like 10k a pizza....

( lost old system on hard drive defect )

 

on low level scale av is still just worth the money for high email traffic imho
companys have their security department ,a single private person must be using tactics like

i even top it with fresh bootable linux OS and data on another stick
but when the normal money is gone and there is only bitmoney its all over anyways

most antivirus is useless as the biggest virus is stupidity and is infinite in scope and time and exist everywhere always.
Computers were invented by geniuses for geniuses and the descent of computing into lower and lower tiers of society brings hordes of problems like spam,phishing,viruses, hacking etc. - the long descent ensures the signal to noise ratio degrades until everything is noise. Antivirus can't protect us from our own nature. Its a false sense of security while the AV companies collate and collect data on you and sell it
many such cases, even Microsoft does it.

There is no safety, only wisdom and many backups. Try not to install too much shit you don't need, don't keep your computer with shit installed on it connected to the internet, and try to examine well programs before installing them and monitor your computer processes daily for suspicious activities.
