Some electric guitar virtual instruments such as Ample Sound and Real Guitar, offer three types of humbucker positions. Neck, Bridge and Both. I'm wondering why the option, Both, is necessary.
I haven't used Both as I didn't need it. Is it useful in a certain case?

The closer a pickup is placed towards the bridge, the sharper and more aggressive it sounds. That's why you usually use the bridge pickup for harder, heavy sounds and the neck pickup for softer sounds. This is also due to the fact that the sound becomes more treble and more brilliant in the direction of the bridge. You can hear that when you strike a note on the neck and then on the bridge on an acoustic guitar for comparison.

USe a Gibson LesPaul Standard, change the switch position, you'll hear a big difference between the 3.

Center is softer, and not so present, so it's useful for some rhythmic parts.

If you cant hear the difference in the plugin, then, it's not well made.

Simple answer: Because it sounds different. Quite different in fact. You might find a use for it, especially for clean tones.

It sounds different, of course. But it sounds kinda in the halfway, so the character is weaker than other two. Every time I make a song, I try all the options, but somehow I just use Neck and Bridge.

TBH, I don't like the sound so much as the character is kinda halfway.

That's why I use Neck for the rhythm part and Bridge for the lead part.

I think the sound is far from the clean tones. I rather use Bridge for it.

I already thought so. It's just a matter of taste. Sometimes it's the golden mean, sometimes it's neither fish nor fowl.

That's the interest of this sound. Imagine if you do a very fast and "crowded" rhythm with it, something that's not meant to be upfront ...

Guitar pickups can give a lot of different sounds depending how they're wired..
Series, Paralel, In/Out Phase, reverse-wound, etc..

In a two humbucker pickups guitar, usually both pickups are fully engaged in the middle position,
but the result will change depending if it's in series/parallel, in/out phase.

Some go for a fuller/richer tone, some go for a thinner out-phase sound.

Also humbuckers can sometimes be split or tapped,
making them be closer to a single coil pickup, and thus giving you even more options..

If you are doing the metal stuff, never ever go to the neck position with the distortion ON, because that would be a genre crime. :guru:

As others have stated, it all depends on taste. My guitar actually has an HSH configuration, so I have an actual middle pickup. I find it useful mostly for cleans and slightly crunchy tones.
But even on guitars with HH configuration, the middle position provides a nice alternative for clean sounds. Personally, I never use the bridge for cleans.

Fully agree with you on that one.

There are actually a ton of different tones available other than simply flicking the switch between the pickups, the volume and tone knobs are too often overlooked.
