I purchased this from positive reviews from members here and I have to say I love it!! It makes making beats fun with the layout.. And I want to ask if anyone is interested in getting me up to speed with ableton live please lets do a skype/teamviewer! I've been an FL studio user for 3 years and made the switch and could not be happier!

    welcome!

    some shortcuts:

tab = swich between arrangement and session view

    ctrl+t = new audio track
    ctrl+shift+t = new midi track
ctrl+shift+m=new midi clip (in selected area) (must be on midi track of course)
    crtl+r=rename whatever is selected

    you can also:
ctrl+shift+d = duplicate selected time in the arrangement
ctrl+shift+delete = delete selected time in arrangement

ctrl+shift+r =render selection (renders everything in the loop marker)
    ctrl+l = loops selected time

delete or backspace or whatever this is called have the same effect in live

oh and if youre sick of all this live stuff just go ctrl+q ;)

you can also play with the native ableton plugs as simpler, sampler and operator, quite simple but useful

please get into drum racks and racks in general. they are so useful!

please add more shortcuts audio people!!!

Awesome yes short cuts! I would specifically interested in learning to do live remixing with this thing and doing cool tricks live and mixing songs with it etc.. The thing that was strange to me in Ableton is adding tracks but ill try those short cuts out. The Native view literally only has like 4-6 tracks on it and I am used to using like 50 in my songs and remixes.. So I just need to switch to arrangement view and add a crapload of tracks i guess to make it feel more 'at home' to me!

check the groove3 ableton push explained video - it's for push 1 but it will teach you what you need to know to go from there.

I will say this everytime but if you are thinking of it like a traditional sequencer then you are not really using it how it was designed.

I love my Push 2 dearly. I'm about to start recording but I'll come back later and drop whatever knowledge I can. In the meantime:

Ableton has a great shortcuts system. Tbh I just love almost everything about Ableton Live. I only recommend that if you have a programmable mouse you map + and - for zoom in and out because holding shift to get to + is kinda lame. to me anyway...

I'm not certain I can afford Ableton at the moment, will Push 2 function with a "Try before you buy" version of live?

Yeah, it's like fraifikmushi said, watch the Groove3 tutorials. Way too much for me to tell you in text and the guy in that video does a better job than anyone else. I figured I'd just kind of point you in the right direction. There's also this

Everyone's workflow will be different anyway. They talk about using it like an instrument, which is a nice idea, and works while you're brainstorming, but I spend about 10% of my time jamming and the remaining 90% making shit "just right" and arranging. So really, the Push workflow basically turns into "whenever it's more convenient not to use the mouse" which is quite a lot. When you want to add a device/plugin but don't want to navigate from where you are in the browser, for example. Honestly I thought the Push 2 price tag was worth it just for the easy access to parameters and more logical menu structure (which I guess you wouldn't know the difference if you're not a Push 1 user).

There's a video on the sister site called "music theory using Ableton Push" that can walk you through the tonal relationships of the pads in a way that will make sense more quickly. Barring that - press the scale button and change the lower-left button to chromatic. Now think of the pads as a guitar/piano combo. The Push is by default in C major so the unlit pads will represent your black piano keys/sharp and flat notes. Now picture the rows as guitar strings and the columns as frets. So happens that the same tonal relationships often hold true between the guitar and Push which was why I originally bought, being a guitar player who sucks at keyboards.
