Sometimes I cant get the number to be right on the dot. I prefer it not to be a decimal. I tried holding down shift and it only works for some numbers.

Open the lane up to make it wide as possible, you should be able to get the number you are after.

 

yep windows more wide = more precise.

 

There is no possibility to enter numerical values for the automation, which is really a drag.
You can simulate a zooming effect by mapping the knob you want to automate to a macro and limit the min/max values as you need them. Then, automate that macro.
