Ableton 12 has trouble loading 11 files

Discussion in 'Live' started by wildeightyeight, Feb 13, 2024.

  1. I'm in the Ableton 12 beta program, and the last 3 builds refuse to load my old 11 projects properly. The files take ages to load and then Ableton will run really badly, with lots of freezing. Basically unusable. A fresh project runs fine with all the same VST's and samples dragged in. But anything created in 11 is impossible to use.

Anyone else bumped into the issues? Any suggestions how to fix?

I've sent bug reports covering it as usual but I'm now concerned as its an issue with every build. And maybe its my set up?

It's beta, better use v11 or wait for final v12.
If you are licensed to beta test, then report to the devs.

  4. yeah im still running 11 to do daily production work.

you can only supply bugs for betas and they dont reply to specific issues in betas

I'm a bit concerned that they might have broken backwards compatibility for some people with certain configurations.

And Id love to use the new midi features and synth in current projects, they are really cool.

Devs "reply" to bugs in beta by fixing them in final release.
You cant expect 100% bugs fixing in next beta.
If you work on serious project then you'd rather not work on beta.
Beta is for testing purpose only.

  6. uurgh, I work on a big app and im dealing with new builds all the time in my day job. Lets all presume we know what a beta is and how bug reports work.

This app breaking class A bug has passed though 3 very stable and polished Ableton builds so far, this might indicate its at my end and a code change they have committed to.

This is why I'm enquiring, to see if others have encountered it and see if its a pc issue.

So far no problem with any of my 11 projects on 12beta. I mean, the ones that crash on 11 crash on 12 as well
But overall they load fine. CPU increased usage is there and for the requeriments they are asking for 12, like dithcing older CPUs for good, I don't think they have planned any optimization at all. They will just wait until their base customers upgrade their rigs.

That is a bold theory. Steinberg wouldn't even do that. But Avid would.

if you think they are gonna downgrade the requirements you are delusional no offense ableton seems pretty elitist to me at least so they wont let users with older than 5h generation core i5 i7 cpu use their daw that's just how it is either you upgrade or you use another daw

  11. thanks for replies highlighting no load issues.

...hmmm that's enough for me to look a little harder into a machine issue. Its a recent and powerful desktop designed for music production, so not a CPU horsepower issue. Maybe slow memory issue. I going to also directly message them about it.

Yeah, but they just mention a reduction on the CPU load once, and just for the resonators filters, in all the changelogs since beta. So I suspect that what we have now is what we are going to get on release.

simply dont use Betas for project critical work.
mean old projects stay in Live 11 and new useless projects get started in Live 12 for the time of it being in Beta.
After that i would keep also Live 11 projects straight in Live 11 and new projects in Live 12, bcs there could be problems with the paradigms between both major versions.

Why would you use beta ?
    Why ?

if it is not to test and check if bugs occur

    Your story seems right
You are testing it and now get it that this is within the beta era mode

after testing a full release... if these bugs are still there... then it's an other topic for an other kind of site
    PeaceR and good luck

The last few new major version number upgrades have had complaints about CPU Spikes for the first couple weeks until another update. Waves is the same way. A new version comes out, and a week later they are releasing a new build to address everything found in the wild. Eventually, you just wait for that "fix build" upgrade.

I also do not think an i5 or even i7 as minimum requirement is that high of a bar in 2024.

It's pretty rare to encounter a program from a real developer, like Ableton; where both the Mac and the Windows versions share the same cross-platform problems. Not with 11 full versions already under their belt. It's why their latency compensation still not being fixed is kind of a joke.

Have you happened to test PDC and External Instrument/hardware latency compensation in 12 yet?

I had a problem with 10 working in 11 loads of projects as you describe freezing hanging etc turned out to be a Sonible eq . It would not load. I had to open in 10 and go through each vst to find that out . can't remember if i had to freeze or remove but it was a PITA. As soon as i replaced all of them in projects everything worked with no issues . Could be something like that maybe?

  21. I also thought it might be a vst, so saved an empty project in 11 and it still loaded very slowly and then ran badly/froze a lot in 12.

I've never encountered such a strange issue before. I'm stumped.
