As my mobile phone is too old, I can no longer install WhatsApp, so I used the 'BlueStacks' emulator to load WhatsApp on Mac Intel Sierra and reply to various messages and stay in touch with friends.

(For those unfamiliar with it, 'BlueStacks' is an emulator that allows you to use Android phone applications, including WhatsApp, on macOS).

Unfortunately, after updating my Mac to Monterey, I realised that BlueStacks no longer works and the new version only runs on Silicon. :snuffy:

Does anyone know of an emulator for Mac Intel that I can use to load again WhatsApp without issues? It would be fantastic if someone among you already uses this solution.

I confidently await your advice... :mates:

    Maybe AI can help you:
I understand your frustration—upgrading macOS can break compatibility with older tools like BlueStacks, especially on Intel hardware. Since you're on an Intel Mac running Monterey (macOS 12), you need an Android emulator that still supports x86_64 architecture and that OS version. Based on current options as of 2025, here are some reliable alternatives that should let you run WhatsApp smoothly. I'll focus on free or accessible ones that are known to work well for basic apps like WhatsApp on Intel Macs.

    Recommended Emulators
    1. Genymotion (Free for Personal Use)
      • This is one of the best alternatives to BlueStacks for Intel Macs. It's a lightweight, performant Android emulator based on VirtualBox (which is still supported on Monterey).
      • Compatibility: Fully supports Intel Macs on macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and later, including Monterey. No issues with x86 Android images.
      • Setup for WhatsApp:
        • Download from the official site (genymotion.com) and create a free account.
        • Install VirtualBox first if prompted (it's bundled or separate).
        • Create a virtual device (e.g., Android 11 or 12, which WhatsApp supports).
        • Install WhatsApp via the Google Play Store in the emulator or sideload the APK.
      • Pros: Fast, customizable (e.g., add GPS for location sharing), and stable for messaging apps. Many users report it works flawlessly on older Intel hardware.
      • Cons: The free version has some limitations like watermarks on screenshots, but that's minor for WhatsApp use. Paid version ($150/year) removes them.
      • Users in similar situations (e.g., on forums like Reddit and MacRumors) confirm it runs WhatsApp without crashes on Monterey Intel setups.
    2. Android Studio's Built-in Emulator (Free)
      • Google's official emulator, included with Android Studio (the IDE for app development). It's robust and directly supports Intel hardware via HAXM (Hardware Accelerated Execution Manager).
      • Compatibility: Excellent for macOS 10.14 (Mojave) and up, including Monterey on Intel. Just ensure you install the Intel HAXM accelerator during setup for better performance.
      • Setup for WhatsApp:
        • Download Android Studio from developer.android.com/studio.
        • During installation, check the box for "Android Virtual Device" (AVD).
        • Launch AVD Manager, create a device (e.g., Pixel 4 with Android 11), and start it.
        • Sign in with a Google account to access Play Store, then install WhatsApp.
      • Pros: Completely free, no ads, and gets regular updates from Google. Handles WhatsApp's calls, media, and notifications well.
      • Cons: Heavier resource usage (needs at least 8GB RAM recommended) and a bit more setup if you're not into development tools. But it's straightforward for emulator-only use.
      • This is a go-to for many developers and hobbyists on Intel Macs post-Monterey.
    3. NoxPlayer (Free)
      • Another popular BlueStacks-like emulator with a simple interface for running Android apps.
      • Compatibility: The legacy versions (e.g., Nox 6.x) support Intel Macs up to Monterey. Avoid the latest versions, as they've shifted focus to Apple Silicon—download an older build if needed.
      • Setup for WhatsApp:
        • Get it from the official site (noxplayer.com) or archived versions via trusted sources like the developer's GitHub.
        • Install, create an Android instance (API 28 or higher), and install WhatsApp from the built-in Play Store.
      • Pros: Easy to use, supports multi-instance for multiple accounts, and keyboard mapping for chats.
      • Cons: Newer versions may prompt for Silicon, so stick to 6.2.1.1 or similar (search for "NoxPlayer Intel Monterey download"). Some adware in free version, but it's manageable.
      • Community feedback highlights it as a solid backup for WhatsApp on older Macs.
    4. LDPlayer (Free, but Check Version)
      • A gaming-focused emulator that's lightweight and works on Intel.
      • Compatibility: Older versions (e.g., LDPlayer 4 or 5) run on Monterey Intel; newer ones are Silicon-optimized.
      • Setup: Similar to Nox—download an Intel-compatible build, set up Android 9+, and add WhatsApp.
      • Pros: Low CPU usage, good for long WhatsApp sessions.
      • Cons: Less polished for non-gaming apps; may require tweaking settings for stability.
      • It's less commonly recommended but viable if the others don't suit.
    Quick Tips
    • Performance: On an older Intel Mac, allocate 2-4GB RAM to the emulator and enable hardware acceleration (VT-x in BIOS if needed). Close other apps to avoid lag in WhatsApp.
    • WhatsApp Specifics: Use a phone number for verification (emulators support SMS via Google Voice or similar). For video calls, ensure your Mac's camera/mic are accessible.
    • Alternatives to Emulators: If emulators feel clunky, consider WhatsApp Web (web.whatsapp.com) on your browser—scan QR from your old phone once, and it syncs messages. Or use the unofficial WhatsApp Desktop app from the Mac App Store, but it requires phone linking.
    • Testing: Start with Genymotion or Android Studio, as they're the most reliable for your setup. If you run into install issues, check system requirements on their sites.
If none of these work or you hit a snag (e.g., specific error), share more details about your Mac model/RAM, and I can refine suggestions. Hope this gets you back chatting with friends soon!
