I have just watched a movie where a film producer was writing a script in a wind mill. How would a round-shaped room be suitable for a music studio???

 

Short answer: no, terrible idea.

The problem with circular rooms is that they tend to focus energy on specific areas rather than distribute it "evenly" (not that parallel rooms are always even, but circulars are less even )

What's usually done on circular rooms is get rid of the focusing aspects, meaning difussing or absorbing most of the reflections on concave surfaces, then make do with the reflection you have left on floors and ceilings or by placing things like reflectors, or kill those too, fuck it. Either way, you'd be trying to get rid of the circular shape (acoustically) to avoid those focusing points.

It's not all bad though, since these reflection patterns are so defined, you could use that to your advantage for controling reflections when recording or doing crazy experiments. Ever did that thing when you talk to a radar dish thing and somebody on another radar dish thing further away hears you clearly? Circles are magic.

A circular room is even worse than a square room, and a square room is horrible.

MGM scoring stage was literally a warehouse before it became a a studio... Round room? I highly doubt you'll have any pleasing acoustical coincidences in a tube though.

 

If stereo sound source (speakers) is far from the center of the room (close to some part of the wall) and not positioned at right angle to the radius, there are no standing waves of the same length, most reflections cancel out, and you get a flat room (ambience) response. So, if arranged properly, it can be perfect, in fact.

Exactly, thought of this very dilemma(?) years ago while designing a studio's acoustics.

 

Or, if the walls are damped and you're a decent distance away using nearfields the walls may be out of the equation and everything is fine. The room could be shaped like... a dick, who cares.

 

Oval rooms are great, strictly circular rooms not so much.

 

Like a big rectangular room that you build/treat with obsorbers so that it becomes more like a diamond shape (but with unparallel angled walls/ceiling). If we are talking about control room (where acoustics are "controlled", hence the name).

 

The guy who "discovered" the circle of fifths came up with it in a round room...go figure!
