I have a problem. My music is pop, but instead of vocal, I take old songs like Tom Jones, stuff and play the melody on my guitar. I use Studio One. To keep things simple, I create a Bus for the Melody Track and then all the other instruments get fed eventually into a "Band Bus" and I use side chain ducking on the Band Bus to keep the rest of the instruments from overwhelming the Melody.

This works fine, but now I want to have a second instrument take over the Melody for one of the verses or choruses, so I want to be able to use the same technique on say the Tenor Sax.

Would it be possible to create a Bus for the Sax and somehow be able to apply the same technique, but by more than my usual 2db? In other words it would seem that I would need to have more than one Band Bus, but I don't see how.

Has anyone done this, know how?

If I understood correctly what you're after there are obviously a lot of ways to achieve this.

I guess you could just put a second (same type) compressor (or whatever you use for ducking) on your "Band Bus", dial the parameters that you want for the sax part and trigger this second one withe the sax signal. And if you're concerned the first one could "colorize" the sound, just automate it so that it switches off (and vice-versa)

Alternatively you could just automate parameters of your first "usual 2dB" one, where the sax comes in, and then revert them back..

We have mix engineers here, that will probably give you an even better solution

Track automation on the tracks on first band bus and automate sax at appropriate time. Simple, I think. Does that help?
