There are mainly two ways of recording the mix of a DAW's out and other sources:

Hardware - if your audio interface supports loopback you should use that. If it supports Multi client operation*, even better.
Software (assisted) - the likes of Voicemeeter and other methods mentioned above.

I guess SW solutions will tax your PC, may be less stable and are usually quite complicated.

Audient (mk2), MOTU (M2/4) and RME cards support loopback. Don't know about others.

* I'm only sure of RME supporting multi-client operation - it means that the interface/driver doesn't even care if you're sending ASIO and/or WDM on the same channel.

 

See, its real flexibility is that Odeus multiclient (must be enabled) can have different setup for EACH single ASIO based program: e.g you have Reaper, Ableton, and any other sw you like, active with different and mostly independent routings.

You'll notice that avery time an ASIO program is launched another tray green icon appears (routing window), you can imagine them as a parallel in/out rack(s) to the main, independent from each other, I guess it's the only one having that feature.
Moreover, it can record/render in flac directly.

I did, very easy, just better have static ips.
But I don't use it for music, just to send a DVB TV audio news from a PC to another one where I'm doing other things (or playing piano).
