At the risk of completely derailing this thread I'll just mention that I decided to watch THX 1138 tonight and all of a sudden I have a really overwhelming desire to get into minimalistic sound collage type music! Can we do a version of this contest with an image where that would be appropriate?

Interpretation is unique and in the ear and eye of we the individual artists. One's still point can be anothers frenetic meltdown. A serene Alpen mountain valley in full flower in the springtime might evoke a sense of relaxation in one person or remind another of the time they saw the mountain climber fall 5,000 feet to their death as they stood helplessly watching, the unfortunate man landing with a horrible thud no more than 20 feet away, the blood splatter squirting through their eyes and onto their brand new hiking boots that never could be completely washed off so we're thrown away.

Years ago I fell asleep while watching Tora,Tora, Tora

Yeah but at some point I think it becomes a cop out if you have, say, a beautiful landscape and I say "well it made me think of industrial music made out of jackhammer samples because that stands in opposition to the picture" LOL You can justify anything with some level of sophistry but is it really appropriate?

You're absolutely right and reflect my own feeling in the matter. I beg that interpreting such a seeming docile scene with such a disconnect as using jackhammer samples is an obvious dereliction of artistic duty and cannot be explained away. However, everyone will filter their experience through their own lens and is the reason that there is an infinity of creative works as yet unfulfilled and just waiting to be plucked from the aether. In the case of the peaceful Alpen scene, or any other focus that is pondered, if there is an authentic relationship between the art produced and the artist then it's all good and wholesome. Raw landscapes or photos don't dictate human action, lived experience does and varies from person to person. Everyone will react differently to the same experience. Example...Donald Trump is either beloved or despised.

@Amore_de_la_Vida great recommendations ! ...'Merci beaucoup!" Gosh, Christine & The Queens are new for me and a wonderful discovery. I'll definitely delve deep. Love the use of the Pachelbel's Cannon in the second one. So many popular songs have been written around that Bach progression. I even tried to do one a few years ago. Must see if I can find it on an old hard drive somewhere!

"....sound collage music"...........interesting idea. What do other people feel about it?

For example (and not necessarily, but we could maybe use something like this picture ) by Erin McCluskey Wheeler called 'The Loudest Sound'.

It could be open to many interpretations.....people could go minimal or maximal instrumentation, loud or soft, realistic or abstract, any style of music, tonal or abstract sounds.... there are so many ways it could be illustrated. Collage too.....the layering of objects in the painting : layering of sounds or instruments in peoples musical interpretation. Could be very abstract sounding or very melodic......

Found your idea very nice and open! The essential IMHO, could be that it "speaks" to yourself first, perhaps representing something that you encountered in the past (or live in the present), or one of your own ways to see the world, the humanity, the relationships between humans, between humans and nature / surrounding / cosmos / universe, etc...

Sometimes, when you choose an image or a graphical object (or a symbol) to illustrate your words or your sound, I have the tendency to think that in fact you express - without words - something that you're curious to see what others think about it, and how they will interpret it. It's like a non-spoken secret your guests have to guess by themselves - without any tip, and no clue! :winker:

    . . .
(I just realized that using the pronoun "you" (in the 2nd paragraph) is a very French way to write, I think an actual English speaker would preferentially use the more neutral subject "one" instead of "you", to talk about something that could apply to anyone of us...

The fact is, French language doesn't have anything that could be considered "neutral", the best example I have is one of the best sellers of Stephen King: "It". Translating this novel in French had been a tremendous effort, just because of that...)

The collage is still available and has not yet been sold at Saatchi Art.

The inspiration image in this collage piece was a set of glass plate negatives from the 1900's that I found in a thrift store and printed on photo paper with an overlay of a Rilke poem written on transparency film. I love working in black and white and letting my collage of printed, painted, and found papers really shine.

The original work on paper comes mounted on a cradled birch panel with a hanging wire so it's ready to hang without a frame.

Very interesting! :shalom:What attracts me first, reading your presentation, is your vibrant homage to René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke!
Thank you to have taken the time to explain this, :mates:because I'm very sensitive to Poetry! The result is that it changes completely my point of view, now I see several details that at first escaped from my sight, like the plant at the top, behind it there's a form which have some resemblance with a quill, the Poet's ultimate weapon! :winker:

I read on wikipedia that it was one of the women he have married with that pushes him hard to change his name to "Rainer", because she thought it was a more "virile", more masculine name... Read this:

Since I was very young, I always thought that these notions of "virility" and "femininity" are total, dumbass, idiot, ***, stupid illusions... All around me, "virile" persons only knew one language: violence. Ultimately, they enjoyed the power, the ascendant that violence granted to them...

It's what I tried to explain in my poem "Les Marches": power is the ultimate drug humanity have ever invented. More than heroin, coke, crack or whatever triple-shit one can poison oneself with: power is far, far, far more dangerous and toxic, it drives people completely crazy, criminally, monstrously crazy!

One day, one fracking day, someone(s) will have to remove completely the factor "power" from the equation. Only then, we will start to live as real humans, equals to any other human, and not more important than Nature. It will be the end of all pretentiousness / ostentation, contemptuousness, useless pride, any kind of instinct of superiority....

    . . .
Oooops! Sorry for the total off-topic, for my defense it's just to say what kind of human and composer I would like to be, before leaving...

A desire for power is part of basic human instinct though, it's part of our evolutionary survival. :dunno:

I'm inclined to think that the only power one should have / need, is on oneself. A good instinct of survival doesn't forcibly imply to dominate, crush, destroy, appropriate everyone and everything to reach this goal. You can find and take (and invent) from Nature everything you need for this tremendous, difficult task (survive, and survive as a species) without necessarily massacre, murder, violent etc...

To be clear, I'm not defending it, I agree with you. I'm just saying you'll never get rid of it, at least in general; it's a drive, like the need for food or sex, and while some people can keep it under control to a relatively healthy degree they're always be many that can't and get addicted.

Sorry, I'm contributing to the off topic-ness

After a little reflection (with my tiny, tiny, tiny little brain...), considering that the "Contest" number one is now over, doing a little OT is not a bad thing, because in fact the starting point of my digression was about creation and humanity... and Rilke! (one of the prominent subjects of the @Lois Lane's collage / painting / Work of Art).

So we could consider that this discussion is a direct consequence, and directly related to all what happened before in this topic...

I'll start off Round #2 today. As this thread has gotten quite long it maybe best for any potential newcomers if I link to it as background reference in a nice new clean thread.
Before I do that if anyone reading here is eager to go and want to start i will use the aforementioned 'Loudest Sound' collage as our inspiration :shalom:

Look out for the new thread....
