A 70's style song for the old folk here

Discussion in 'Work in Process' started by Lenny Belardo II, Nov 9, 2021.

  1. In the silence of my thought
in the clamour of my word
    have your oceans your way
    it all seems so absurd

    I look in a mirror
    I don't like what I can see
do they have to throw stones?
do they have to stare at me?

    lots and lots of questions
there are too many to be asked
    now I listen really hard
I've been dealt too many cards
but there are too many answers
for a simple man like me
I think that I'll just settle
    for simplicity

    I can sense a feeling
    so ethereal and grey
    and a kind-of inner strength
    that won't soon go away

    something new to try
or just try the same some more
    tackle anything you like
    like you've never tried before

    lots and lots of questions
there are too many to be asked
    now I listen really hard
I've been dealt too many cards
but there are too many answers
for a simple man like me
I think that I'll just settle
    for simplicity

there's no face at the window
    there’s nobody waving goodbye
but my hand is all a-flutter
    like some crazy butterfly

    lots and lots of questions
there are too many to be asked
    now I listen really hard
I've been dealt too many cards
but there are too many answers
for a simple man like me
I think that I'll just settle
    for simplicity

Hey there! Just saw this now. Am listening and loving the tune and the lyrics. Fairly well mixed and mastered as well. Nice separation of everything, good instrument tones. I would love to have heard a little less vocal auto-tune on your voice, but apart from that - well done! :)

    I really love it.

Wonderful track man.I dont like the autotune though ,you could sing it a bit lower and it would be fine or use autotune but with not that much correction.I prefer soulful vocals even if they are not great than autotuned .

    Nice track. I like it.

There's something I'm struggling with in some vocals I recorded a while back, but only using now, and noticed in yours. Some of the sibilants have what seems like a really sharp slicing high frequency sound to them, kind of what i think a papercut sounds like... Any idea what may have contributed to it in yours. In my case, I'm guessing, recording while monitoring with open back headphones into a sensitive mic. Followed by layers of compression and high end EQ allowing it to build up. I've put de-essers between various inserts to control it but it's either still noticable or sounds overdone.

Is this a finished vocal? If not, I'd love to hear it after some massaging with a brief note on what what used on the sibilance.
As for the autotune, easy enough to go back into the most audible sections and tune them manually to sound more natural.

Like it, kind of reminds me in parts of 80’s British pop, but not the synth heavy stuff.
Are you a Brit? There were parts were it was a really strong specific accent.
If you ever want someone to throw an orchestral arrangement over a track, would love a go.

Thanks Stephen, another great track, I would have recognized it as one of yours blindfolded by the Piano phrasing, musical and vocal style, reminds me of Tree Talk and some of your other earlier posts, this seems to be the style you excel in so keep it up, hope to hear more tracks like this later on. Our generation knows and understands music compared to most of the noise and crap on the radio today.

  11. Thanks all for listening. If you don't know the story behind the songs that are part of this project, a friend of mine who I have known for nearly sixty years has an advanced form of Parkinsons. Hence, lyrics like:

    there’s nobody waving goodbye
but my hand is all a-flutter
    like some crazy butterfly

He used to be a competent guitarist, but cannot play anymore. So I compose, play and record everything by myself. It should be noted that at my age, I cannot sing very well (I had never sung a song until last year), so I use tools like Melodyne. Imperfections and digital artifacts introduced by my probable misuse of this tool are preferable to me than out of tune singing. The songs are first and foremost a record of my friends thoughts as his condition worsens. Sadly, he cannot even speak now and the question of how long he may live is of concern to me. So my focus is on simply expressing the lyric. With thirty eight songs finished in the last year, I hope you can forgive me if I move on quickly to the next song before I have tidied up things like sibilance or any balance or arrangement issues.
I admit I post here in the hope that we get more listens. I know that my friend is amazed that so many people (all from here) have heard his voice through me.
So I thank you on his behalf. And from me....go easy on my singing. I am really very bad.

There are many orchestral tracks. Also it may sound British but we're Australian. Which means we're British, but convicts.

P.S. I was ripping off early Jackson Browne with this song.

Aussie was going to be my other guess, because there was one line you sang that didn’t have the same accent.
    Great work.

Just be out of tune, just sing it and get it "wrong", at least it would be believable and from the heart. The autotune removes all feeling.

  15. I appreciate ill informed and counter productive comments and this is right up there with the best.

What can I say, all my favourite singers couldn't sing. Have a good night.

You have been doing some work on your basslines :like:
It actually sounds like how a rock bass player would play it.
I will assume it is intentionally and it has that Alan Parsons reminiscence, you have the bass sounding spot on other than one thing. In The 1970s there weren't any 5-string basses with low B's in mass production like today other than Orchestral uprights with an extension:rofl:The notes below E gave it away otherwise I would have said it completely sounds like a real 1970s rock bassline.
