I think the issue is not not that he was selling software, which I agree with your argument, but is the sentence worth the same as child pornography, gangland killings, major fraud (ripping off the government) etc.?
I can tell you that there are professional musicians out there making money, using software they have NOT paid for. Companies and Corporations are clinging onto business models which are way out of date and are abusing copyright laws. I am thinking seriously about becoming a lawyer, that appears to be where the real money is. (just joking, I have morals)

well there should be more prison time for child pornography and killings (I'd rather add weekly lashes to the back with heavy whips during the given sentence). Fraud is pretty much on par with this, as the government is also losing out on taxes usually paid by the buyer (sales tax), company (revenue tax), and developer (income tax).

There is great money in being a lawyer if you get your own license (not working for another firm), and know how to initiate your own cases...perhaps sourcing clients who could be owed awards. If you're younger then 20, definitely go for it, otherwise, consider the cost.

I'm against that as well but you can't underestimate the impact of money in the warez scene. Just think about affiliate programs and the like. Also you have to remember that things progress very quickly so they'll start with something like this and pretty soon you're going to jail just for downloading (in Japan that's already begun). In my opinion it's a slippery slope and I don't believe anyone should get a life sentence for selling software. There are people that have raped children and gotten way less time.

he was doing this from February 2003 to June 2008,serial pirating
not just that Naveed Sheikh was selling the pirate software
    alot!!!
Naveed Sheikh was asking to be busted
    selling pirating software come on
this is different from just downloading software
he was actually selling it and making money

    I don't know if a 87 month sentence is good for a non-violent crime
I believe he should be on probation
and be watching closely on what he does on he computer for 8 years (of Probation)

dude was making cake I bet from selling illegal copies
    ?????????????????????

All I'm going to say is that America has about 5% of the world's population but yet has 1/4th of the amount of people in jails in the entire world. There's something wrong with that picture and if you look into it there are too many people in jail for nonviolent crimes with many related to drugs. The prison business is booming so who knows what the future holds? And if prison isn't viable they'll just take everything you have for the rest of your life. My observation is that isn't it ironic that there's such a strong push against piracy yet real crimes such as the malware and hacking industry doesn't get practically any of the heat? Most likely it's related to pirates being much easier targets as catching them doesn't require much mental acuity whereas these criminals are good at what they do and it would take real effort to catch up with them.
