About to dive in the genre head first. What electronic drums are more suited for the genre 808s are 909s? Or a mixture of both?

These are serious tools for proper electronic music.
Download drum sample packs from vengeance, or make a search as ''edm drums''. You will love them more if you are into that ''edm'' thing.

Or you can go IDM and record all drums with house-hold items.

Yeah, I've read that one before. Pretty good one.
However, in certain IDM styles this is quite true - most sounds are field recordings, found sounds (or "Foley" as many people these days incorrectly refer them), etc. Not your typical EDM sample packs. I'm thinking of artists like Amon Tobin, Ametsub, Jon Hopkins, etc.

EDM, as house or techno or even tango for that matter are very formulaic styles. Is not too much room for experimenting (even if "gurus" consider house or techno as being limitless they are actually very tight & formulaic genres). I don't see that as being a problem though. Other artists like to promote more obscure music styles because they like the fact that there are really no limits when it comes to sound/structure. I like them all :)
