Sharing what my chain looks like (yes, I love harmonics) based on it @Riddim Machine. I've been experimenting with this technique ever since I clarified the processing chain in my thread. I used a similar idea but with the Need Preamps instead (shuffling between 73/81/84 till it sounded good to me). I don't find this technique snake oil at all, it doesn't work all the time with all 8 on and if you're not careful you can cause more problems with your drums rather than making them sound good. The main thing I have to worry about is the transients, so I have a transient shaper and sends to add them back if needed. I think it doesn't hurt to share what works for you and if Jaycen liked what it did for him, he's just practicing what he preaches I guess. As for me, it works dialed in just right but I wouldn't recommend doing it all the time. It definitely has its own flavor.

Not applicable to all drums. Too much sub energy is lost and The high peaks at 60hz are harsh on my mastering chain so I don't need them. I do a similar thing with a simple eq trick. a better result

Just came across this thread! (Steve Hybicki “creator” of the trick here)
The original song that I did the NLS trick on is Trouble ft. Drake - Bring it Back. That song required a very heavy texture to the drums. I def do not use 8 on every song. I’d say half of the time I use 1-3 NLS, and these days i don’t use it nearly as much because the sound has changed. Each layer of NLS adds harmonics to it. Also, in almost every case you need to put a limiter on after the NLS if you are using it on a drum buss or it won’t work at all! You can make drums EXTREMELY loud with this, but I have gone overboard with it too. An example would be Gucci On My - Migos, Mike Will, 21 Savage and YG. The 808 drives so hard I heard it blow speakers in the club one time. Back then most trap songs started in the club and I wanted the 808 to be extra dirty on those big speakers but times have changed. People don’t discover music in the clubs like they used to. Big club speakers can handle much more low end than the average TikToker’s iPhone speaker.

yeah steven I agree about the "new overall sound"

I have then decided to use your technique on all drums (snares, claps, HH, upper percussions so on so forth) EXCEPT kicks and 808s, which I put in a dedicated combiner bus

SOMETIMES I try to send a bit of the combined kick/808 to the bus with the NLSs and see what happens, but lately it's very rare

anyhow, in this format, I still use your trick pretty often

wondering to know what you or whoever is used to this technique thinks about my actual solution

    thanks for posting

    Hi Steve, welcome, bro!
Thanks for the explanation (and the limiter tip!). Nothing better than the creator words to make things more clear. With the experience i had with this trick and your explanation it makes more sense in the way the sound is delivered out of the speakers and when it can be useful, especially related to translation on different playback systems

yea I would say that is a pretty good way to adapt to the new sound. This might sound crazy but I have actually been using sonalksis stereo tools on 808s. I set it to mono below like 80hz for example so the low frequencies go to the middle and any distortion from the midrange in the 808s can still sound wide. I might try it in combo with the NLS now actually

I like that Sonalksis stereo tool plugin too, and I'd mono everything under about 100 with it. The Mac version is kind of buggy though on my system, so I have been trying other mono-maker plugins in place of Sonalksis. Have you given the new-ish Brainworx/PA bx_enhancer a try yet? You might like it in that spot. https://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/products/bx_enhancer.html. :)
