There was an interview not too long ago on Hot 97 where the radio dj’s seemed skeptical of Khalid’s actual musical talent. Khalid was hit flat footed with the question & he started telling a convoluted story about he did it all in the past, but it takes a real genius to find the people “ghost writers” who can do it… lol. A few Max "secrets' that I can recall: * Lyrics are not necessarily a high priority. His focus is more on melody and phonetics than lyrical content. He would rather have a lyric that doesn't make sense than a vocal line that doesn't hit hard, melodically. * He likes to try and hit the first chorus by the fifty second mark. * [EDIT] [REMEMBERED ANOTHER ONE] He likes to try and bring one instrument into the mix, at a time. Obviously there are practical limitations to this as we all know (e.g., the song may not permit it,) however, it is more of a "philosophy" than a "practice." The concept is that the brain prefers to have minimal things introduced to it at one time - the fewer the better - hence why every element introduced to the song's arrangement MUST contribute. The few elements to the song's arrangement MUST serve a purpose otherwise it is only messy/confusing/useless/detrimental to either the song arrangement itself, the mix, or perhaps even both. Ultimately, all of this boils down to Max's approach to "song arrangement." Honestly, I thought I had more than this, haha! Maybe I do, but for right now, this is what I can remember. If I remember more I'll come back and add to the list. Maybe some other people will remember a few other "secrets" of his that have leaked on to the internet or been observed by others. Makes you wonder just how much has still been uncovered given how many "industries" operate this way making me think it's just how it is among these types of people. Music, Olympics, Movies, video games and what else? I went from hopeful, to "there aren't enough exists along a highway for anybody out here" when I learned about these types of individuals.
