imagine to be in the middle of the stage hearing a massive bass techno drop, you start floating in the air
would love to see it in many clubs :boombox: :boombox:

    Cool!
I saw (on fb) Vladislav Delay was playing there too. Would be sweet to try out.

22.2 surround has existed since 2006 or so, 10.2 surround probably earlier, Auro 3D 9.1 and Dolby atmos 62.2 since a few years ago, so the 3D arrangement of speakers (width, depth, height) is nothing new.

Applying it to a club environment? Not new either, Kraftwerk have done surround sound/WFS for clubs https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=live+surround+kraftwerk , I wouldn't be surprised if other DJs have done it before.

Only thing new possibly, is the speaker count and possibly the height element.

problem is that people still don't realize what sound is...you can have 100 speakers and still won't match nature...'sound' comes from inside of the human body...not outside of it.

    @ Freerider197,

Firstly, Thanks for this announcement...

And if you want to experiment with 'Multichannels', a few years ago, a French Developer which name is 'AcousModules' has launched a 'bunch' of VST Plugins for that purpose : 'Multichannel Audio Plugins'.

You can find in-depth Info, Documentations, Tutorials,... following this way :

    'AcousModules' Plugins

You can also download for FREE almost all the Plugins available :

    'SURROUND : 5.1 > octo > 13.1'

    'Haute résolution / High Res : 2D 16 / 17.1 / 22.2 / Dome 25'

'OTHERS : OSX, STEREO, 64 bits'

    'HR 32''

Good experiments with all this 'bunch' of Plugins !!!

the problem remains the same : medias

what's the point of having a 99.9 surround system, if every versions of some particular apps, only the 5.1 is supported...
cubase can only do 5.1. i imagine it's done so people invest in nuendo, more video-oriented. but i wonder if it can support a 7.1 coding.

as long as these authoring apps can barely handle 7.1 channels, dolby and dts and others can come with their audissey crap, 11.2 channels... there is a limit in what can be done and extracted from 2 rear signals.... most 7.1 in movies are just 5.1 signals, and they extract a few fly or mosquito farts from the left-right surround speakers, and there we have, our 7.1 channels.

the day a guy will buy a nuendo, pyramix, etc etc app, and will be able to right clic, and do "add 13.1 channels", or 17.2, or 23.4, and will start moving his sounds across that landscape, well, that day, we will start buying some bluray videos, with more than 7.1 channels. until then, it's discrete shit for everybody, and people will buy their onkyo AV receivers, and will play with the 300 different algorithms, and his 5 speakers.

also, people don't understand that the biggest impact from sound comes from the front speakers, and there's no need to buy some 140w speakers for the rear-surround (6 and 7th channel) channels. everything behind our head, it's all about ambiance and effects. no need to buy rear speakers that can handle 32Hz...

but i guess sellers and manufacturers would have a hard time, trying to explain to people that for the rear channels, they only need some tiny mono speackers, an average living room, maybe 20-30 watts for the rear surround, would already be enough. but of course, how could they sell those tiny speakers, at only 20 or 30 euros max ? some years ago, i slowly bought a jbl 7.1 system. today, i see how stupid i was, when choosing 180W speakers for the rear channels, that are located like 1 meter from the head. yes, idiot. 10 times smaller would have been enough.
at the end, i grabbed 2 pairs of ES10, and it was already TOO strong.

so yeah, i don't understand why apps don't allow multi channel mixes, 11,13, 15, etc channels. if the apps allow it, and the audio guys start authoring at 10-15-20.2 channels, maybe the video industry will start releasing movies with more than 8 channels.

anyway, most cinemas are only 5.1... despite the dozens speakers across the huge room.

i love watching a good movie, with a great 5.1 or 7.1 soundtrack. one of those great pleasures in life.

how is the 3d p0rn market doing ?

    @ McCookie,

For this, I still don't know exactly... by cons, for the '5.1', '7.1', '9.1', and sometimes far beyond as well... it already exists !!! *yes*

Simply ask to a few privileged 'Porn' Actresses what's going on during a 'Gang Bang' !!! :wow:

P.S: Several sources for a single receptacle... :bleh:

the man needs more than 2 hands, or let's take a step further to the future, he needs some sort of mind controlled interface, so he can do it by only thinking of it !

MOTU DP8 & the latest Nuendo supports up to 10.2 surround iirc, and Reaper supports up to 64ch generic multichannel (I've used up to 12ch once, and use 10ch regularly, (6ch surround + 2ch scrap + 2ch sidechain)).

Dolby Atmos is an object-based (not channel-based) system. They somehow make it compatible with 7.1 so you can use it in.... pro tools. idk how they do it.

Auro (channel-based) is (somewhat) 5.1 compatible so you can use it in DAWs and normal 5.1 playback systems also.

I know about the Spat VSTs, but they aren't quite as usable & intuitive as say, Waves 360 5.1 surround panner. I'm also holding back on spat because mac support is weak (not that I use mac much, but I like my projects to be potentially x-platform compat.)

McCookie is somewhat right about front speakers - surround formats should also be focusing on the front (and height) too, because hearing is more sensitive at the front.

    Aside/rant:

For music, getting mixing engineers to use the speakers effectively is still a major problem. Crap sounding surround and upscales from the studios (on DVDA & SACD) is not uncommon.

I've also re/mixed some music in surround over the years from MTs, MIDI, etc.
