About apples and oranges... worst comparison ever! Feel free to mount wheels from 6000 BC to your car.

I never told you what car I drive, maybe 6000 BCE wheels is exactly what I need.

Point remains though. You can't improve/reinvent (the shape of) the wheel. Plugin format matters fuck all in 99.2% of cases because they share exactly the same block of code to do their sample processing across all formats anyway (except for u-he synths + CLAP).

No need to panic but the choice is yours, My music PC is windows 7 offline I have all the programs and software I need all installed, no need to upgrade anything it all works, I have a duplicate backup PC, then I have a windows 10 PC & laptop for everything else. They all have SSD drives for speed & efficiency. I don't really care what anyone thinks about my systems or what I use, I only have to satisfy my own music needs and I am content, isn't that the main point. So if you want something new just don't get coerced or conned into buying something that you may not be happy with, try several things and see what has all the options you require, good luck.

oh i do. have two hd's for everything. got hd's up the wazoo over here. time machine and multiple clones for my mac. been doing all this for ages. i just use a pc laptop for internet and watching shit on tv. most of the stuff lost is just shows to watch and other miscellany that may or may not deserved archiving. difference is the loss is understandable when an hd fails, but not when windows or finder crashes (don't think that ever happened in nearly 30 years of using mac, and if it did maybe once or twice in the pre osx era, didn't destroy data)

Made the switch to Mac 21 years ago. Expecting a Mac to last 7+ years is a fair and realistic time frame in my experience as long as:

    1) it stays put in the studio - for some reason, the Mac Book Pros that I've taken with me all over the world (flying of course, but also riding motorcycles, and at the beach, etc) all experienced battery problems after 3 years. Nothing lethal, batteries were replaced.

    2) you keep your laptop cool - heat is a killer - and that means never ever take it to bed, or put it on the couch, or anywhere that might obstruct the vents. Desks and tables only for your Mac laptops.

With good care, you might easily stretch its life to 10+ years - my old one lasted eight years. It didn't die, I just gave it to someone who needed a laptop after I bought the new one. Just make sure to spring up for the full Mac warranty, AppleCare+ or AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss to extend the 1 year warranty coverage and also get 24/7 priority tech support and accidental damage protection.

Audio software wise, it's a breeze: just run the dmg or pkg and you're good to go. Added benefit: if ever one day you need to come (or have a client who asks you to) check out Logic, with a Mac you can. Audio hardware wise, it's quite literally plug and play - something no Win machine could ever claim.

Hehe. My updating/upgrading stopped with win95. Have not let the OS update itself. Ever. As far as upgrading or moving to new OS, I have never "upgraded" because ms "upgrades" are the devils work and very rarely accomplish what I ask of them. The machines are simply rebuilt with a new ISO image and stuff moved over from the old backup image as needed.

Thanks @Balisani for your experiences and tips!

Try to only buy laptops that offer a replaceable battery and that have good energy management.

Yeah, fortunately taking the steps @Balisani laid out, with apple care + etc, apple will replace your battery should it drop (I think) below 80% original capacity. I believe the cost ranges from nothing to something not too outrageous depending on where it was purchased and how old it is .... (and honestly, they've replaced batteries for my older MacBook's well out of Apple Care warranty just asking them nice etc). And the new m series Macs have pretty good energy/battery management. Certainly better then before.
