SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner is much better than TimeMachine. Why? Easy, you can actually BOOT from the clone, even via USB.

You could also try to create a clone with SuperSuper or CarbonCopyCloner. A clone is even bootable via USB , so you have anytime a running System.
Anything fine here so far, but that depends on what you use... Just make a backup and you should be save.
Rack Extensions have full UNDO. AudioUnit3 runs also in a Sandbox (crash protection)

Or Hackintosh ;) Withouit entering your root password no trojan will be able to install on OS X as far as I know
The only really downside of Hackintosh is that reporting bugs to software developers might get less comfortable. I posted but for my legit...
