I started producing Beats in 1998 the old fashioned way - Sampling with my AKAI S950. Besides my 950 i have worked with a lot of other Samplers to this day, including an Casio CZ1, Akai S900, Akai S20, Akai S01. They were all great but i stuck with the S950 and an SP12 as my main setup for 14 years. But at the moment my perfect combination is a MPC60II, a S950 and a S5000.
To me, real Hip Hop Beats only works with Sampling, not with Synthesizers. It is a totally different approach than composing other kinds of music. You got to dig deep in the recordshelfs and find that one Sample. The search for the samples is not a waste of time it is part of the way. Once you have found it you cut it, chop it and go back to the records and find it another match. You gotta listen carefully to the Track and it tells you where to go - what fits to it and what not. There is no such thing as a bad track, there are only producers with poor hearing and no patience...
